Kris is going mad now he wants to protect “Rehya”. This was a tough chapter to read with lots of pseudo science jargon. You’d think I’d like the Symmetriad stuff more but idk

Apart from being unreliable and potentially having hallucinations, Kris seems to be also under some immediate influence by the ocean in his mood suddenly becoming bored and entirely uninterested in contextually important conversations

Poor Kelvin is fighting himself on wether or not he’s hallucinating. There’s a really good line on page 50 that has him losing it hard. He devises an experiment relying on the computer to prove this is real life but I think he’s over the edge regardless

Researching this ocean on Solaris?

No idea what’s happening in this episode. Something about a press and going to the bar and some newspaper boys shouting about some race idk. Should I give up

Tragic to see The tutor speak of his wish to leave Henley in the flashbacks knowing that even though he eventually makes it to London he leaves his family there and all

Wedding sequence was a bit dull. Third person works here because what is Agnes thinking? What was she expecting to make itself known at the wedding

The prose in this is so pretty. It’s nice to be reading literary fiction again especially one in third person.
Two chapters in and the book gives you so much from Hamnet and Judith with her illness to “the tutor” and his shit dad and that romantic interaction omg can’t wait to see it the movie and the mythical nature revolving Agnes. So good so far

Very interesting that Ryland plays a role in saving Rocky here. Since the book is in first person, he seems to be a lot more intelligent and resourceful than his movie counterpart

So much more prep they had to do in order to make this mission work and no issues with the actual collection of the astrophage.
And rocky is 291 years old is crazy

I’m mostly enjoying what I’m reading so far.
Even though Weir is kind of a cringy millennial kinda guy, I guess some of his diamonds appease to my age range.

There was a scene in this chapter though where Stratt is in court for copyright and that kinda stuff is really cringy. The way that they write her character is ehhh a little much at times. Kinda marvelly

I know that it’s obvious that the novel would have more depth than the movie but I really love how grace is experiencing like a cultural exposition with Rocky and it’s so cool

OK so he says
“ What if Eridians have a lifespan of 2,000,000 years and it’s polite to wait 100 years to reply “ because he was paranoid about how long it would take for Rocky to reply and that was actually kind of funny.
I’m starting to like Ryland

This was a very sociological and historical chapter.
It’s becoming very interesting to treat this like a slideshow of all of our collective achievements in understanding the cosmos.
Sagan ends this one saying “we make our world significant by the courage of our questions and by the depths of our answers” which is still so relevant to this day

This is the first time I’m reading a book after watching the adaptation and it makes me so inpatient for the twists and turns but at the same me I do like the emotional depth even if sometimes its so immature with this author

Finally got to this “I like kids line” that people rag on online. It wasn’t that bad but I can understand why people felt it was in bad taste.

So far, I do like that this book is in first person. I feel like it increases that sense of confusion and isolation that you can share with the protagonist

It’s also taking much longer here than in the movie for him to figure out what’s happening

Wier writes things like “ gentleman’s equipment “ and “aaaaaand he’s dead” and makes the character say “motherfluffer” while acting surprised by it.

The tone for this book has been set pretty clearly. Big bang theory style writing.

Reading this in between Ulysses makes me feel like I’m reading a book for toddlers.

Today I went to a book club to discuss the first six episodes of Ulysses.
I realized that being in a book club is kind of like watching a movie at the cinema rather than at home. It’s a completely different experience.
I now have a much better understanding of what is happening in this book and I am excited to read more of it

Zahn does this thing where he constantly uses heartbeats to describe a length of time and I won’t lie, I don’t really love it.
Also, they finally gave us Mara’s backstory and I’m not gonna lie, it’s not compelling not really. And I lowkey got a spoiler about her and it kinda makes her character even less interesting smh

I read somewhere that when James Joyce was writing this, his wife could overhear him giggling to himself.
This chapter was pretty difficult to read and I wouldn’t be surprised if many people drop it here.
I have a pretty good idea how to summarize the first two chapters but this one was filled with made up words, prose and vocabulary that made it so bard to follow. Something about the beach? Murder?

There’s an author’s note in this version where the writer tells us how readers often compare thrawn to Sherlock Holmes and I think that that was intentional but also I think that our author is not very smart
