Yo Odysseus is a straight savage the way he made them ladies clean up those bodies and the blood just to kill them 😮‍💨
And he’s such a drama queen the way he reveals himself lol

Circes was definitely my favorite episode so far for sure. So trippy and the funniest one for sure. The narrative starts to get a little cleaner.
I find myself enjoying the book much more in general now that I’m taking it less seriously and now that I’ve almost finished the Odyssey

In true poetic fashion, this story repeats and veers into tangents which is kinda funny but a little annoying at times.
His bottom maid goes into a story of the scar on his foot and then we need a whole flashback scene about it lol

So basically a bunch of Odysseus journey was bumming it out with Calypso and Circe?
And what exactly is the point of the beggars outfit anyways

These gods are really not shit lol punishing the poor Phaecians just for feeling Odysseus.

I also don’t really get the deception on reaching Ithaca on Odysseus’ end

Ulises just kinda wanders around the house of the dead in this one. The best part is when he comments on seeing Sisyphus

Ultimately, you have to admire Odysseus‘s honesty in storytelling. I mean, if I were telling that story, I wouldn’t have told people that because of my taunting to the cannibalistic cyclops, I am now facing a curse by Poseidon that keeps me from coming home safely

Sagan gets really romantic and unscientific in this one but you know what? It’s one of the more enjoyable chapters. He talks about the knowledge stored within our genes which is interesting. He’s also gushes over our ability to store knowledge outside of our bodies like in “time traveling“ literature. Fun chapter that ends in a warning message about wether we can prevent our own extinction to enjoy the cosmos

It’s honestly so fuckin depressing that I can’t contemplate what a 4th dimension would look like in my brain. I mean the concept of a tesseract just pisses me off so bad.

In this one Sagan talks about a bouncing universe where no information passes through the crunch and expansion. Depressing

Something about perversion and nationalism.
Bloom goes out and has fantasies on the beach and then there’s like a birthing scene in the Oxen. Lots of callbacks to the odyssey which I wish I would have read sooner. Idk. This is a lot

You know I really didn’t love Odysseus when I was reading The song of Achilles.
I kinda wish that I would have read this right after that.
Anyways on to help from the charmed we go!!!

Carl Sagan’s infatuation with the stars really is contagious. The way he paints the lives of the stars, their cosmic kitchen, our origins. He makes it so accessible and interesting. He does kind of start to yap after a while and then seems at a loss how to end the chapter, talking about the sun in almost a worship kinda way lol but great chapter anyways

A very unceremonious death for such an evil character. And Piranesi giving him such a pretty eulogy.

Also Piranesi says some pretty profound things in this chapter about his home not being a means to an end in regards to the pursuit of knowledge which I like

Orlando has a very interesting reflection and line about life here but I don’t love Shel’s random inclusion into the story

As the story progresses it’s very interesting to try and understand what was Joyce’s intention when writing this book. Was it to show the grandiose of the everyday? Perhaps it as to satirize heroes and godly triumphs? It’s so sarcastic at times that it’s hard not to think so

I think this might be my favorite chapter so far. Chapter 4. Orlando kind of just goes on loving their life while trying to find meaning in it as well as reflect on the differences within their new found sex. It reads in a lovely way and offers a perspective that is not typically seen

The segment in p74/75 about TRUTH and nothing but was very interesting. And the line Virginia gives about man and his desire to impose one’s views on others stemming from the differences between Orlando and the Gypsies as well as the nouveau rich stuff as pretty interesting.
Not to mention Orlando turning into a woman and it being a non-consequential plot point, at least as of now, is pretty silly.

You know what, I really liked episode ten. I mean it was kind of a lot of filler rabble. Random characters but somehow still very idiosyncratic. You get into a sort of trance when you really start to get into this damn story. Even if I just only barely know what’s going on

Poor Telemachus. It was so obvious that the straggler suitors would send those his way to ensure his trip fails. And his mother naturally more worried about him than Odysseus since he is wholly inexperienced.

Poor Orlando. From existential dread to a romantic betrayal (that he lowkey deserved) and now becoming bored with every facet of life.
Woolf writes this in such an interesting way because she keeps breaking the fourth wall and it makes my engagement with this not so easy. Although I suppose that’s my fault as I think this is supposed to be a biography?
