Pretty cool how people in pre revolutionary China use the term ‘old head’ just like me

The depiction of starvation plus the description of O-lan’s stillbirth plus the way these wealthy men represented by his shitty uncle are trying to take advantage of his extremity is one of the darkest things I’ve read in historical fiction.

This one is a less of a slap cautionary tale about greed. Sometimes you need to tell family you’re broke tbh.

Pretty sad to see O-lan get so happy about owning land in the estate where she was once enslaved only to work harder now that they own that land

There’s a guilt of even approaching abundance that is thrust upon only the poor it seems. And it’s displayed here in a similar way as it is in stories like ‘the pearl’ and it’s enough to just break your little heart

Wuan Lang, who is portrayed as pretty kind, I think, has

Reading this chapter reminds me of that planet I heard of observed that is potentially completely and entirely covered in a thick shell of ice. I guess Venus is that way to that theoretical inhabitants could not realistically leave that planet.

The eugenics exposition in the first two chapters was some of the most eerie and messed up and creative stuff I’ve read in a dystopian.
I like the cultural world building in the following chapter and the introduction of characters has been very good. Super excited to read some more

There’s a lot of interesting history in this chapter regarding Newton and Kepler as well as others. Sagan does a great job at explain astronomical concepts in a simple way.
I also find it so refreshing how, in a very pragmatic way, he refers to all humans as all our ancestors.
He also really hated astrology.

I literally feel so bad for Rosalie nobody understands her like omg and it’s so sad that she would bring Agnes to console her with her company when they are as incompatible as it gets.
Rosalie goes off in beautiful vexation in this chapter and Agnes makes a really good observation on how desperate she is in her situation

I actually feel so bad for Lady Ashby.
The contrast between her and Agnes’ mom is so interesting to see unfold
