Steinbeck’s description of the setting is transcendent and really paint the picture of California during the turn of the 19th century. The relationship among characters sneaks up on you in a way that inspires you to keep reading. Great stuff so far.

This is my first attempt at reading a collection of short stories. It was a bleak start. As I read, I gain insight on Carver’s common themes within these stories: The relationship between human connection and alcohol. I went in blind, but Gazebo has redeemed my prior judgements. I hope this collection can continue to surprise me and offer more.

Bitch cunts.
