Interesting book based on Robert Louis Stevenson tropes(?) and filled with quotes from his work. A man from Edinburgh intent on ending his life after drawing a bird for his dead father goes to a remote lighthouse island and finds renewed reason to live. Lots of symbolism, including possibly around the holy trinity and linguistically inventive, but lacking a bit of punch in the end.

A charming, wry story of someone trying to set up a bookshop in a small Suffolk village which doesn’t want it. The portrait of small minded village enmities is delicious. A number of cross references to Human Voices too.

A good premise but strangely flat with a quite anti-climactic finish.

Brilliant subtle writing which flits between the seemingly normal and the strangely off key within the same sentence at times. The plot ‘twist’ is a little easy to see coming, but a delightful read nonetheless.

Very interesting stylistically. Written in a spare, unconventional grammar and syntax across two timeframes. Flashbacks/ stories told in film and a diary form. Th story is pretty dark. Unfortunately, though interesting it wasn't a book which encouraged me to pick it up.
