Similar structure to flights - interweaves separate stories with some common themes. As with Flights, this leads to a variable and uneven read.

Good solid page turner but I can’t really see what the hype is about. The writing is fine, but the plot is pretty basic despite some tuna missions to Greek history, mythology and literature.

The story sat in the near dystopian future of 2025. Themes include community, belief, love, and slavery. The story is told propulsively but the ending, no matter how affecting, can’t help but feel a little anti-climactic because this is just the first part of a story otherwise an excellent novel.

An outstanding novel. The plot (and language) measure out the cycles of violence, oppression and trauma caused by slavery. The story is told inventively with passages of stream of consciousness in the second half. The penultimate chapter is some of the most compelling propulsive writing I’ve ever experienced.

An extraordinary beautifully written story about Maria de France. Set in a 12th century Nunnery, the story covers most of her lifetime and explores female leadership friendship love and care. The stylish remarkable written from an external perspective but with the mindset of the 12th century there is no direct speech only reported speech which adds to the feeling of immersion.
