Charming historical novel set during the Garibaldi period. It sets out the life and earth of a prince and his attempts to navigate his way, and his family’s way, through the Risorgimento. An interesting g chapter which narrates the death of the main character from his perspective.

Interesting premise which is engaging and moves at pace. But it becomes difficult to keep a grip on the different storylines and what has happened to whom in which timeline. So ultimately not entirely successful.

Complex story about the relationship between fathers and sons, sin and guilt and hypocrisy. Says a little in the middle but strong first third and last third. The section which recounts the religious experience/ awakening in particular.

Dense. Not a quick read for 140 pages only. Packed with allusions and metaphor. Reflections on how mental illness is treated, the role of women in 1920s England. Stylistically innovative and cinematic.

Witty, acerbic satire of privilege. None of the characters are likeable, so great reading for a misanthrope! But the novel does fall a little flat in the end - it’s hard to discern what the point is, and the ending with 9/11, whilst set up well drying the novel, sort of lacks a punch.
