got through 2 chapters yesterday and the charmer today. they all are sounding the same tbh, just with very slightly difference emphasis. I think if I were to try this, I would emphasize the natural traits minus the innocence. wonder, enthusiasm, joy, interest all of those feel natural to me. While manipulation is gross, bringing others happiness can be seen as a kind of manipulation.

Chapter 13 was so cute and chapter 14 was our priest's backstory. and while the backstory was definitely sad, it was far from the eldritch horrors of Paris or the tourney. i fear for 15

finished 'the rake' and 'ideal lover'. a lot of this just sounds like you just have to find what is missing and fill that hole so that person can depend on you. Which, sure, but that doesn't really give me much to work with...find the hole HOW? Make them feel seen HOW? ignore their words focus on body language? sure. But wouldn't word choice be just as important? What about how often they bring it up?

you know i really hope the gargoyles are wrong, but this is a sad tale. a dark tale. an awful tale. I guess I'll read on eventually.

listening to this after re-watching knight of the seven kingdoms is crazy. I think I might stick to medieval fantasy for a while. Or just hit up the witcher series again seeing how I've been sitting on the 5th audiobook for a while now.

I shouldn't have eaten breakfast while listening to this chapter. Holy shit i love the imagery, the nightmarish and unsettling the tension...and the girl just walks up to him asking if hes ready to go now. Like did she watch him fuck a corpse? Did he fuck a corpse? What was he actually doing?!? Ahhhh. Im so glad this audio book was free.

I have not touched a book in a minute. I've been busy and I was on a roll in august, but this month has been rough.

That being said, I like this book. I love the direction. It's getting me the right kind of angry. But that being said, I need to put it down again.

The husbands, the social conditioning, the framing is all 100%

i am so over this fucking book. Alfie did nothing wrong. obviously somebody that was looking to be more than friends does that sorta thing. i hate tilly as a character. she has so much money she can live in london and travel without having a job. for all we know she could buy the building for him and she does a...social media post? and all the melodrama with Harper. The dialogue was bland before now its just cringe.

Oh my god. Finally we are getting to what I think was the point. But with all this side tracking with these pointless trips that bring no substance...and roughly 100 pages to go? This is a bad book and I will be donating it first chance I get.

Man that was a slow start, glad I stuck through chapter 7 down onto chapter 8

Its like reading the blandest account. This was supposed to be about reading books, but instead the end of a 'plot point' there is something shoe horned in from a book. In fact, the book is more about Tilly's travels and quickly avoiding any bad feelings rather than actually be introspective. I know this is supposed to be light and fun, but the level of unawareness seeps into the prose to the point of disbelief.

Put it down for a minute. Still kinda hate it. Still reads stiff even though tilly is having an emotional time with mom in law. The shit with Harper is wild, making someone a dating profile after their husband dying of cancer. Not unbelievable, but unbelievable if that makes sense

I just finished chapter 3. I remember why i put this down. I want to like this, and it's not uninteresting, but it certainly doesn't evoke much in me. maybe frustration? I was born in the final summer of the 90s in Cali. I've been in OK for the past decade, but I avoid small towns and suburbs like the plague. For this reason exactly.

This one has been sitting in my library for a while. My partner loves c.s lewis, but none of his fictional works. I don't know what to make of this, as an older sister who has raised her little siblings, I know this practical motherly instinct. The near jealousy or envy that a child doesn't love you as much as you love them, but all that is years behind me now. this reads like a lifetime ago.

Earlier, the lingo was so strange I could gloss over it. I understood what was happening, but I could avoid having to sit through the understanding of each detail. I've gotten the hang of it now, though it feels like its less intensive (in slang, not in violence). I, unlike Alex, could turn away. Since the start of this book i had to keep saying to myself "hes 15. Hes 15". Through his acts, through other's acts...

I am getting annoyed at this pattern where we learn things about Joe but its only in isolation for the month. Like June we learn they ran together? Why not have sprinkled that seed in January? People starting to jog for their new years resolution. It feels like everything is isolated to that month and each new book is a new thing that wont be discussed (much if at all) again.

The paris trip after the Bali trip feels so milk toast. And again, I dont get to have Billy's emotional reactions to going through all the books she gets to read. Im glad that there is another plot line developing because so much of this is boring. Not even sweet and fantastical, its worse than hallmark

She never allows for me to feel things other than elation with tilly. Like, when she is in Bali and she is having this emotional crescendo where she uploads herself in tears, its blown by. It felt so melodramatic. I feel the sickly sweetness and the joy and wonder. But never any of the negative. I want to feel this grief with this character but the author never gives any room
