Okay, so the funniness is gone. Not that it’s not entertaining anymore, because it is, but a book that prides itself on “making every adult laugh out loud” I feel like it should at least keep making me blow air out my nose—which it isn’t. I also literally can’t seem to give one (1) single shit about any of these characters, I don’t know. Kind of a let-down to be honest.

It’s good writing-wise and rather engaging… don’t really know what else to say. It’s hard to be impressed when the last thing one read was The Perks of Being a Wallflower (which was just wow!) I like the characters and feel like they’re realistic; nothing revolutionary, though. Ah, but it did make me giggle several times so far!

Okay, so I’m beginning to understand why this book has some not-so-great reviews. I still like it quite a bit, but what I liked especially about the book was the eeriness—and it feels like that’s just fading in and out. Every other chapter, the book seems to become a TGGTVV-esque historical fiction rather than the horror story with historical elements I came for. Bummer! The writing is just a little worse too.

Really good so far! Despite me having a relatively low attention span and tolerance for filler, this is keeping me spectacularly invested. That is to say, there is no excess filler and the story is very compelling. No complaints, really—especially not after Alien Clay (urk).

I have no clue if I’ve said this before—I probably have—but why the hell does this book have so low of a rating on here?! Going into this blind, having only read the blurb at the back, I can’t see anything particularly wrong with it. It’s very well-written (to the point where Hardinge’s writing has my imposter syndrome acting up) and the characters are very likeable.

It’s very interesting so far and I like the characters; reminds me of TGGTVV so far. No idea why it only has 3-4 stars on here?

Still sucks, kind of. At least something happened—but it was immediately resolved without roughly any stakes and within maybe six pages. Bruh.

It just feels like some Brit masplaining his worldbuilding to me. It is interesting and very well built, for sure—but can something happen for once??? The stakes feel so low. Like either they die to nature, or they die to the camp. The consequences are always so inane. Plus, the writing style feels extremely pretentious to me, but I guess that’s okay because it makes sense considering the MC.
