this book is so agonizing it made me go back and upgrade a rating i gave to a previous read out of sheer appreciation/remorse for what i've lost

so far, not so good 🙈 these characters are flat as pancakes and there's more telling-than-showing than i'd expect from anything above a middle grade reading level... ack

this better end with **** being ********** and ***** being exploded into a hundred thousand tiny particles

2. i keep forgetting there's a fucking christian guy and every time he speaks i get jumpscared

i see why fans and critics alike have compared this with h*rry p*tter—hard not to when jkr cornered the market on Wizard School in the public conscience—but so far, lev grossman seems to me a more thoughtful and skilled author by a very wide margin. these teenagers actually read like teenagers, his prose is lovely and immersive, and i'd bet my tit he's not a fucking terf 🪷

wow reading this and 'working stiff' back to back really is a wild and fascinating combo
