GRAN HAS A PAST oh my gosh … This is crazy. She’s lived a tough life. Also, I just can’t believe the drama, this book is told in flashbacks with every chapter but in Gran’s voice this time. I wonder why Gran always uses those common sayings. Not saying they aren’t useful but that’s interesting. Maybe to teach Molly? Some of the sayings came from Mrs. Mead, I see…

Gosh I could just devour these books. My head spins with possibilities of what happened. I’m guessing Preston is selling the book to give Molly money? Maybe? Not sure. Also, they need to stop going to the nearest pawn shop!!! So suspicious. The backstory is wild

Easily digestible… to read. Funny and sad and endearing.

Oh Molly, how curious I am to see how this goes

I appear to be a procrastinator perfectionist, secondly a Parisian perfectionist. The procrastinator, I knew. The Parisian made me tear up. This book is well-written, it’s very easily understood psychologically and I love that she was able to take her clients experiences and put them in here. Very realistic without being preachy. Would immediately slipped into self-loathing and despair but she says no every time.

As much as I try not to fall into the traps of self-help books which try to read your mind (I am a psychology person at heart), she did, in fact, read me for filth. I liked a quote that I may now use in some job interviews because it is both honest and impressive for myself. “Some gifts feel like a burden until you understand how they can serve you”

Aug 23: Gosh it’s riveting. I was joking about tears earlier but now I have tears and shivers

Aug 22 Still: That son of a gun did it. Why did I feel like I reached the MAV. Tears.

Aug 22: Got slower because of course earthly beings overthink (perhaps rightly so) and slow everything down. I’m with Watney here. He’s the one on the moon!!

Aug 20 Still: Gosh, it is just SO good. I love that they used Watney because anyone can be intelligent but the sheer level of humor plus panic plus the drama on Earth makes this a delightful read

Aug 20, 2025: I wish I had read this earlier! But also not because it’s got me HOOKED. I’m rooting for Mark Watney! But also hyper aware how much we hype up someone like him on Mars vs the people on earth in the news cycle. Sigh. Anyways he’s an interesting guy. Super intelligent. Probably why it’s funny that he’s like I’m the comic relief! King… anyways. Go Mark!

“At what point does human drive become self-destruction?”

Honestly, I believe him. It’s a very thorough recount of the tale. Truth or not, Jon always has the power of words on his side.

It’s almost surreal that the actual disaster is over in such a short amount of time. Most of the book is foreboding and then the fallout is … unimaginable.

I’m sure there are multiple accounts of events but Jon does his homework

Insane. I can’t believe it’s not over yet either. The entire disaster is just a chapter or so, the devastation came quick

Lord. It really is a survivors tale. Nobody should be climbing this mountain. Lack of air? Gosh.

Well-written, strange sense of foreboding. I don’t think there’s a more honest telling of an adventure like this. Squabbling over facts is one thing, but he takes us through his head. I like that he’s not convincing us of the truth but takes our oxygen masks off and shows us his POV. Much better qualifier than begging us to listen to his judgment.

Whilst reading this book and watching her documentary Jane, Jane Goodall passed away. She will forever be remembered as the woman who changed science despite not having a scientific background. Just pure passion and perseverance. Here’s to Jane, you were a legend and I am honored to keep reading. I can’t help but think I found her again as a young adult for a reason. Love you, Jane.

In some ways, I think I have a bias about humans and animals. Perhaps because of how I grew up, equating them. I owe this to my zoologist grandma and family who treated our pets as family. Not really pets after all. But I’m seeing distinctions between chimps and humans. As though, for me, I gain the opposite lesson from this book. Most see the difference, I see the similarity. And maybe that’s why I’m shocked.

Captivating. I’m shocked by the behaviors of the chimps and the human characteristics. Or perhaps our chimp characteristics. Anyways, Jane is so fascinating as a person too. A true scientist, through and through. Exactly like my grandmother.

Brilliant. I actually gasped at the pictures of the chimps when they suddenly arrived. I now see why this was a sensation. I love how she named the chimps and turned any pretentiousness from science upon its head. I also love her relationship with her mother and her wha with words. Jane is a very determined person. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a neurodivergence of sorts. There’s a mania (genius) present.

SHERLOCK HELLO?!?!?! WHY DID HE JUMP OUT THE - IM- HE IS SO FUNNY OMG… HE JUST LIKES TO MESS WITH WATSON HIS NEUROTYPICAL SIDEKICK. Watson is so funny too, he really just is there for the journey. Truly the epitome of “just happy to be here” great duo

Holmes wants a witness to his work. Watson has nothing better to do than witness. They’re going to be friends. Not a bad deal.

Ah, the origins, what a treat. Love the backstory and first characterizations of Watson and Holmes. Maybe friendship really is about which annoyances you can stand the most

This one was totally obvious when she told everything that happened while she was employed!! It was my first assumption!! Still wild though. Wrapped up very quick and I’m surprised by the humanization of the friendship of Holmes and Watson. I forget that Holmes can be quite moody

This apparently Doyle’s favorite of the stories which has me paying attention extra hard. What could the solution be?! Is it a poisoned wedding band? An exotic creature? The uncle is at fault right? But how?

Finished this part, very interesting … Holmes did not care to turn the man into the police. Fascinating. Also: “The man hesitated for an instant. “My name is John Robinson,” he answered with a sidelong glance.“No, no; the real name,” said Holmes sweetly. “It is always awkward doing business with an alias.”

Screaming inside at this oh my gosh. Sweetly is such a funny word. HILARIOUS. 20 min for 66%

16 minutes in …. Whew. Very fun already. I do love the format of these books. It’s not a “gotcha” pattern, Doyle really knows how to write mystery and fantastic conclusions without being irritating
