I love this book, I love Isako, and most of all I love Fonda Lee’s world building. NO ONE DOES IT LIKE HER

Okay I get what’s bothering me. The story simply summarized or glazed over Sebastian and Antoine’s summer together so now I need to take it on good faith that Sebastian likes him enough to make himself vulnerable to save him. This would be a lot more compelling if I had been able to actually SEE their relationship play out. Grump grump grump.

Bummed that I’m just not really in to this book and can’t really put a finger on why that is yet. Part of it is, I think, that it’s lacking the eerie suspense that I wanted it to have for the most part

2ha best book of all time. Chapter one and I was already cryin in the club. This only improves and improves again on a reread 🩷🩷 And the audiobook narrator is fantastic!!

Crawling back to this after a few months—this is still a fun read and I’m enjoying it. The Mad Max vibes are fun.

I am actually shocked that I, ME, am saying this but I think this might be too dark for me. And I mean too dark meaning it doesn’t have any shred of light to it or levity—it’s pages and pages of torture. I wish I had more feelings for mc to begin with because that can make all the difference but as it is she doesn’t have a solid enough character for me.

I’m really genuinely enjoying ‘Emperor’ as I enjoyed ‘Daughter’ but sometimes, despite the multiple islands, despite the politics of the governors and the Shardless Few, this world feels oddly simple to me. This is just minor, I think, in the grand scheme of things, because overall I’m having a lot of fun reading

okay I like this book SO much. I am having such a good time reading. I think about it when I put it down. I FEEL ALIVE.

This, while having very pretty prose, is a little too unstructured and experimental for me. Marney’s POV is fairly exhausting to follow. Right now, I am also wondering what the point of all these scenes is.

this is such a breath of fresh air seriously. a diverse and fun cast of characters. people who LIE, cheat, and steal. WELL CONSTRUCTED SENTENCES. i’m ALIVE.

This premise is totally intriguing buuuuut I find the characterization weaker than I am craving….. find myself missing Fonda Lee, CS Pacat, Tamsyn Muir….
