So far, it’s interesting. The author definitely researched the complications of a family with both foster/adopted kids and biological kids; Ruby’s struggles so far and guilt over having any struggles are definitely accurate. Oliver’s deception is definitely going to come back to bite him; that’s just basic plot.

Well written so far, with the ever-popular trope of a headstrong princess who feels trapped by rank and femininity. Family tensions combine with the world building to draw the reader in. It’s a nice touch to start it out with an excerpt from a biased, in-universe history book the protagonist is frustrated by

Zaria is the kind of character who isn’t often a main character because she doesn’t want to be. The way her words freeze up is almost hauntingly familiar. I can already tell this book won’t be forgotten anytime soon

Perfect grammar can’t possibly overcome a lackluster story, but a story with this much heart can easily survive occasional minor faults. It’s a bit different for the Rapunzel retelling in the collection to have more than one Gothel, but it works, and makes sense.

I love Twelfth Night and takes of the fae always fascinate me. This is both, and it is beautiful.

It took me embarrassingly long to realize it wasn’t Forest of Scarlet. It’s nice to see that it wasn’t a simple matter for Brigid to go from human in the human world to how at home she becomes among the fae

So far, it’s reminding me of the irritating bits of Northanger Abbey. There’s an actual (mediocre, if prolific) novelist in the group, pretending badly to be a maid, and Batrice herself clearly has a crush on someone unsuitable

It’s a bit jarring to keep hearing the mistake of calling the wife of an earl/heir to an earldom a countess. The story is flowing beautifully, but that keeps jerking my attention away.

So far, the love interest seems to bear a resemblance to one Percy Blakeney, slow disguise overlaying a sharp mind. If he truly is meant as the love interest, he and Brenna will be well suited. (Not quite certain of the percentage, as I’m listening to it within a boxed set)
