I wonder if there’s a part of the book that reveals why the Monte Cristo sandwich is called the Monte Cristo. I hope they make it in here

There are some really hateable characters here and I’m only 2 chapters in. This is gonna be a generational read I can feel it

Just met Danglars and he already seems like a major asshole. Hope I don’t see him again but it’s a Victorian novel so I know that’ll never happen.

Ok now we’re getting somewhere. More of the cool supernatural stuff, this time not a ‘maybe’ like how it is in the more gothic novels. Found out his daughter Kate survived the fire like Moses (which was a fun thing to recognize before the narrator mentioned it himself). Those two paragraphs of chapter 7 that talked about his ‘train dreams’ were so interesting. Maybe my favorite part of the book so far.

Really loving all the supernatural elements of it, gives me gothic classic vibes. Overall I’m enjoying the book but is it weird to say that nothing substantial has happened yet? I mean stuff has happened in the book but it seems like it isn’t building up to anything in particular.

Coming fresh off reading Cormac McCarthy this book is a breath of fresh air. Even though he’s my favorite author you really gotta prepare yourself to read that man’s books.

I know I’ve said it before but the way McCarthy writes is so awesome. Even though this is the first book of his I’ve really delved into he might be my favorite author

That talk Grady had with the great aunt might be the most fascinating literary conversation I’ve ever read. Made me want to reread Blood Meridian which is something I didn’t think I’d say so soon.

“What do you want to know? he said.
Only what the world wants to know.
What does the world want to know.
The world wants to know if you have cojones. If you are brave.” Fuuucckkk that’s so good dude. That entire conversation was amazing

McCarthy is really good at writing about environments. It’s just so hard not to get immersed in this book when he writes like this

Shits getting real now. They’re going back north, but did they commit a crime or anything? I honestly might’ve missed that. I know they ran away but did they steal anything before they left? Idk but this is still an amazing book. Annoying to translate all the Spanish sometimes cause it takes me out of the novel but it’s still so beautiful and immersive.

I had to take a little break reading this while on vacation because I didn’t have any WiFi and I end up googling like 2 phrases or words per page. Back on the grind now though

Still loving it, but holy shit can it get really tedious translating entire paragraphs of dialogue because they’re 100% in Spanish. Worth it though

This isn’t the first book I’ve read by Cormac McCarthy, but this is absolutely the first book I’ve been able to really appreciate from him. The way he describes the environment and actions of his characters are just so immersive

Wanted to add on to my last comment. No Country felt more like a commentary on the people of a bygone era. Ed Tom Bell wasn’t fit for the new world of killers, but it was still a western in the sense that it had people experiencing a new world changing around them. Pretty Horses seems, to me at least, like more of a commentary of the overall death of the west, i.e. mention of old native tribes and trains moving in.

I’ve never experienced a western of any kind of medium being set in the 1940s, but I think it’s super cool. Especially since a lot of westerns that are focused on the ‘end of the west’ take place in the 1890-1910s (red dead redemption). Ok I take back what I just said. McCarthy also made No Country for Old Men. But that book and this one’s atmosphere are amazing. Have a feeling I’ll love this book.

I didn’t really love the end of issue pages when I first read watchmen because I thought it killed the pace, but they’re so great. Hollis Mason’s couple chapters are so intriguing and really brings you into the world of watchmen.

Rereading this is making me realize how much of a chud Rorschach actually is. Guy was defending a rapist and thinks he’s better than everyone when he’s just a 5’6 guy who doesn’t shower

Really enjoying it. Feel like there’s a lot to wrap up in 100 pages with the way Herbert writes. Not a complaint because his writing style is really good, just hope that he’s able to conclude it in a satisfying way. Probably won’t be as good as the first book, but I think this will be great nonetheless

Adding onto that last note, I’m curious where this whole conspiracy will go. I know Paul is supposed to be a ‘fallen angel’ archetype (even though he was going to be the leader of the Jihad since the first book), and there are hints of that already in his way of rule and how he disregards religious practices on arrakis. Just hoping that there is enough time to flesh this out properly and not rush it.
