Julie Davis is 75% done with Les Misérables
Done with the barricades and ready for the sewers of Paris. I can only imagine the detail Hugo is going to go into.

What?! Just when I thought I had everything all locked down, TWIST! Couldn't have predicted that one. I doff my hat to you Sir Walter Scott.

How could I have forgotten Miss Clack and her tracts? Wilkie Collins had a really wicked sense of humor. Talk about sending up religious "types." Genius.

This book is not at all what I think of as a Western. Ok. Yes it is in Wyoming. And there are cowboys. But it is really just a wonderfully told, funny, interesting character study ... and a romance.

Listening gives one room to ruminate on bigger themes ... at least it does for me in this book. I feel as if we'd have structured our welfare system differently if our political leaders in the 1960s had been forced to consider the lessons of Little Dorrit. Human nature hasn't changed since then.

I would read this book all over again (that would be the third time) just for Dick Swiveller and the Marchioness. I love them so much. Also for the evil Quilp. You've got to admire his single mindedness. Insult him, however unintentionally or tangentially, and he's going to weave an intricate plot to bring you down. As Kit knows, to his sorrow.

I am so glad I took a chance on this book. It is a bonkers alternate history that yet somehow manages to hew fairly close to history for the first half. And it's a sweet romance where a kiss is the highest hope, a la Georgette Heyer. AND it's funny and silly. Perfect summer reading.

Only on Canto X or so ... but this is so good. I am having to be very stern with myself to only read one canto a day ... so I can let the goodness from each one sink in.

Wow, I'm really hating this book. It's all the elephant hunting on the journey. I'm truly a child of my times.

Julie Davis is on page 100 of 644 of Uncle Tom's Cabin
I couldn't settle on any audiobook and for some reason bethought myself of when I read UTC on Forgotten Classics so long ago. I stripped out the intros and commentary (knowing them all too well) and am relistening. Uncle Tom's Cabin once a year. It hits the spot. Evidently!
