I had to read this segment 5 times to understand why it was supposed to be significant. Wouldn’t he have heard the daggers flying past his ears? Felt the breeze? Why does he need to back up?

Already confused about whether being a Dragon Rider is meant to be a position of social prestige or a punishment. Kind of reminds me of ace combat 7 where they court-martial the MC for killing the former president with a fighter jet and punish him by still letting him fly a fighter jet. Don't give criminals who probably hate you fighter jets/dragons?

Honestly after how the last few books I've been reading have been going, I'm just ecstatic that this one has even the barest hint of a plot
