Probably the only living author that never lets me down.

Why am I so bored? I was supposed to like this. In theory.

The first abandoned book of 2021.
I just can’t.

“A shiver went down her spine.” Come on.

“A shadow ran across her face?” Really? Across her face? Which she cannot see?

Sunflowers “tilting their necks longingly towards a shifting sun, like lovers who knew they would never be loved the way they wished.” They’re sunflowers. They “wish” to have sunlight.

I’m too old for this.

I love her. I love her. I love her. Two pages in, but don’t care. I absolutely love her.

Srpski prevod je OČAJAN. “Ona je nalazila da je...” i “Konel je nalazio da je to...” Svi nešto nalaze u ovoj knjizi, niko ne misli. Ili “druge majke nisu popustljive toliko kao ja” i slične direktno prevedene engleske konstrukcije. Bespotrebni subjekat. Osjetim da je knjiga dobra, likovi kompleksni, ali prevod ju je uništio. Kao da gledam fenomenalno naslikanu sliku kroz neko prljavo staklo.

I picked this one up for research and am completely spellbound. So far I’ve learned about the terrifying beasts of Alexander the Great’s imagination - rhinos and cobras whose actual shape and size were probably deformed by the soldiers’ fear. And, more importantly, I found out that Gryphons were real. I can’t explain why this fact makes me so incredibly happy.

Hm. So basically now I’m reading pretty much only to see what happens next. Which is the equivalent of eating a meal in order to go to the toilet.

So far, the writing is a bit cliché and it seems like the author chose the most obvious solutions wherever she had to choose how to portray love, jealousy, dictatorship, etc.
I’ll keep reading just because I love Bulgakov and “The Master and Margarita” is one of my favorite novels. But if my interest lies more in what is OUTSIDE of the text than what’s in it, the book is already a disappointment to me.
