This is simply gorgeous writing. It is wrapping me up and inviting me to take my time as this world is slowly built, a universe before my mind’s eye.

The final two sections are picking up a bit, which is good.

Really fun story so far! Less “hard sci-fi” than I was anticipating but that’s cool. You kinda have to wink at some of the inexplicable character decisions, but other than that, it’s a super fun book so far.

This is really dragging through the middle. It’s a cool story and started off great, but these middle 150-200 pages are a slog.

While still interesting, the narrative has slowed down in the middle.

Some creepy, Seabury Quinn style house of horrors stuff is this section!

Still a lot of internal monologue, but I feel I know the world and the characters better so it’s not as strenuous to get to the good stuff. A riveting story beneath the angsty navel gazing.

Beautiful writing and slow, careful, creepy world building. This is going to be a wonderful story.

Returning to the Scholomance - I like this story but just want a less navel-gazey narrative style in this one.

I…uh…I’m reading a lot of this for the first time.

As I suspected, pretty painful to read.

I really like this writing so far. It’s hooked me in, easy to turn the pages, and while the horror elements haven’t entered yet the narrative is gripping. This author is new to me and I like what I see so far!

This is SO up my alley.

Caramon’s alcoholism struck me as funny the first time I read this when I was a kid. Now, as an adult, it’s sad and scary. It’s interesting, how these seminal books hit different at different times of your life.

Love the writing on this. Having a hard time figuring out how these early chapters connect to each other.

Packed with truth and authenticity, for good and for ill. It’s a feat to keep so large a cast of characters all so distinct and so interesting. The trail goes on…

This book started out fairly slow but is growing on me. One thing it does well is illustrate the amazingly complicated relationships between the native peoples and the white invaders.

A men’s Book club pick for the 1920’s theme. There’s a good story to be told here, I’m sure of it. This writer is not the one to tell it. Structurally, this book is thus far organized poorly. Technically, the writing is fairly poor with loads of repetition and several noticeable misused words (“…he absolved from alcohol.” I think you mean abstained, bud). Not excited to finish.
