This is painful to read. Why am I doing this to myself?

Where's the sci-fi? This all sounds like human stuff. I also have no idea what is going on.

"She’d been found on a Ganglian slave ship bound for their home world where she would have brought a high price with her pale skin and flaming red hair, for colored hair is as rare a females."
So... even amongst non-human species, lighter skin is considered better, and Eurocentric standards of beauty are supposed to be relevant among highly advanced extraterrestrials. Typical in romance fiction? Yes. Believable? No.

This protagonist is really annoying. I'm hoping there will be some character development where she's concerned because at this point in time she has less depth than the all-important, frequently mentioned Barbie that she is compared to.

"Now I understood the slightly exotic slant to the dark eyes, the deep gold skin, the bad attitude. I didn't think there could be a more primitive pairing of genes." So, the protagonist relates looking "exotic" and relatively dark-skinned to being "primitive." This book recycles the tired old motif of dark physical traits being associated with something evil or sinister. It's racist, and it's also been done before.

"I was a twenty-two-year-old single white female alone in a strange country where my sister had been killed." Of course you were. It's not like the publishing companies of paranormal romance novels can have a NON-white main character to read about.

I'm not fucking happy with this book. Just because Melmanon suddenly stops being a fucking douchebag asswipe panty waste motherfucker doesn't mean he's worthy of Charity's forgiveness, much less her love.

So, even when the "hero" of the book wields a whip against the heroine I'm apparently still supposed to believe this book is a romance? How the hell is it a romance? How could there possibly be a HEA after all this shit? Melmanon sure as hell better do something to make up for all of his abuse in the second half of this book. I'm curious to see if my opinion changes about him by the end of the book. But for now, smh.

Yet, there was something about this quiet, dignified male that contradicted all of these thoughts. She couldn’t feel repulsion or fury toward him no matter how hard she tried or what reason she could think of to justify such feelings. She felt something else and refused to identify it.

I want to know the reason why Savannah resisted William's compulsion. I can't just let it go. Why is she so special? I don't normally like main female characters to be supernaturally special. For some reason, I hope it's the trauma that's altered her mind, kind of like Dexter Morgan. That would be cool.
