Visceral and real. I can tell I'll need to read this book many more times throughout my life.

Really could have used the author to not have unnecessarily dunked on the "mostly artists" group called The Order Of The Good Death, a group very much aligned with what Tisdale is saying. Let's not let the narcissism of small differences play here.

It took a bit to get going, honestly I wish it'd gotten as gay as it did sooner but it's a pretty good yarn.

oh my god the writing in this book is SO sharp, so perfect. No one would blame the author who incites pity for the main character, but Nutting doesn't, she presents this life and this reality not only as a fact, but as extremely relatable fact. I'm part way through Jasper's dolphin story and I'm just roaring. This book is as absolutely hilarious as it is cuttingly witty

Ok, it's finally picking up again. I am finding myself skimming the battle scenes, I don't really care how close to zero Horza gets every. single. time. But I am rooting for Balveda and Fal'Ngeestra as much as I am for Horza - maybe moreso? Predictably, I LOOOOOVE the universe. I hear later books get a lot better. This is... just ok, but great scene setting. Horza is not a character I care much about.

just skip The Eaters. seriously. He lands, more tragedy, content warning friggin extremely traumatic and descriptive cannibalism, then he steals an older Culture ship and escapes. legit that is all you need to know. it seems absolutely shockingly unnecessary and brutal.

I did not remember how political this book is!!! A very very rewarding reread. It is frustrating though to find the "evil people are obese/deviant" trope, which I did not remark on when I read it for the first time ten years ago.

Haven't read this in ten years. I've owned three copies, and never managed to hold them for long, lending them out immediately. The copy I'm reading now, luckily, is borrowed. I'm already so excited about it, again.

CONTENT SPOILER:

Love the background. The "I don't know what's happening" phase pre-Cenidi bringing him in for questioning was a bit too long for my tastes but the language is so good that it was still a totally pleasurable romp. REALLY looking forward to where this is going - will we break again & move to a new character in another fifty pages? Who knows?!

Quite good. Written kindly but straight-down-the-line, kindly but straightforwardly.

I'm happy Ista got out of Valenda, but that's the extent of my interest in this story so far.

Look. This book is terrific. Really, really, really good. Loaded with sex and gender politics, social theory, and a great story, and I'll recommend this series to anyone. BUT I JUST CAN'T GET INTO IT. I'm putting it down. Gah. Sorry.

Already liking the pacing of this one more than that of the first book. First book was like an introduction to the flavor of the world and its background, and I feel like the story is finally beginning!
