I've read maybe 20 Lorrie Moore stories, plus the novel Anagrams, and they're all the same. Quirky man-woman relationship stories with flawed characters and Moore's compulsive need to deliver one-liners, many of which are funny but when there's a dud, it stinks up the whole page. And what's with the Midwest bashing? Everyone in the Midwest is an oaf, uncultured, "spacey with estrogen from meat and cheese..." 2 stars

Reading this for the second time and enjoying it even more than the first time. I think it's a huge mistake to cast Adam Driver as Jack Gladney in the movie version that is slated to come out in 2022. Greta Gerwig is playing Babette. I can live with that. So read the book before the movie comes out! It's Delillo's funniest, most accessible novel, brimming with his trademark beautiful and ominous sentences.

Terrible attempt at comic writing. I made it to page 56 and quit. Hard to believe Mishima was a runner-up for the Nobel Prize. Maybe his other novels have more merit. This one was just dumb and without an iota of credibility.

The first 15 pages or so were great, but then it went completely off the rails and I won't waste my time on the rest of the book/essay.

I do occasionally read a bestseller. So far, p. 40, not bad, although the extremely short sentences are annoying. I mean, sometimes there are three sentences on a single line of text. "She looked out the window. She sighed. She closed her eyes."

Attempting to re-read this one. It's one of his more challenging works.

Madness. He must have been a big influence on Burroughs and Bukowski, among others.
