'The death of Sandra Bland is what happens when society does not know how to talk to strangers'
This has been a book about a conundrum. We certainly have no choice but to talk to strangers, especially in our modern, borderless world.
What should we do?
We could start by no longer penalizing one another for defaulting to truth. If you're a parent whose chid was abused by a stranger -even if you were in the room- .

* Is drunken consent still consent? It has to be, the rolling goes on. Otherwise the vast majority of people happily having sex while drunk belong in jail alongside the small number of people for whom having sex while drunk constituted a criminal act.Besides, if 'M' can say that she was not responsible for her decisions because she was drunk, why couldn't Benjamin Bree say the same thing? The principle that . . . .

A 9Short) explanation of the Amanda Knox case.
On the night of November 1, 2007, Meredith Kercher was murdered by Rudy Guede. After a mountain of argumentation, speculation and controversy, his guilt is a certainty. Guede was a shady character who had been hanging around the house in the Italian city of Perugia, where Kercher, a college student, was living during a year abroad. Guede had a criminal history.

The coverage of OxyContin, by Meier and other journalists, almost never mentioned the Sackler family. But that did not mean that the family was not worried by it. The public might have failed to link the Sackler name with OxyContin, but when friends and aquaintances of the Sacklers' read the negative press, they understood who owned the company in question.

CHAPTER V: Signs you're in a cult. I spent the weeks after Tony's suicide in a state of semi-stunned autopilot. As hard as it was, and nearly impossible to focus on work, I was thankful to be busy and glad for the distraction. It seemed distasteful to consider legal obligations at a time like this; however, there were realities to deal with. For starters, the company owed more episodes to fulfill the contract with CNN

The quote, pg 161 does reminds me of the lyrics of Joan Manuel Serrat Cantares, a poem by Manuel Machado rewritten as a song by Serrat from 1969. There's a line that says (translated from the Spanish) When the goldfinch bird won't sing, when the poet is seen as a foreigner (Machado was forced into exile) when prayers are not enough . . .pilgrim, there's no path ahead of you, you make the path as you forge ahead."

Alyosha heard Shukhov's whispered prayer, and, turning to him: "There you are Ivan Denisovich, your soul is begging to pray. Why don't you give it its freedom?"
Shukhov stole a look t him. Alyosha's eyes glowed like two candles.
"Well, Alyosha," he said with a sight, "its this way. Prayers are like those appeals of ours; either they don't get through or they're returned with a 'rejected' scrawled across them."

Everyone dashed to his job. They took Shukhov's hammer from him and wound up his string. The mortar carriers and the block lifters hurried down into the machine room. They's nothing more to do up there. Three masons remained on top -Kilgas, Senka, and Shukhov. Tiurin walked around to see how much wall they'd built. He was pleased. "Not bad, eh? In half a day. Without any fucking lift."

I'm and have been a fan of Malcolm for a while, I've read most of his books and althought I have them in my "To read" shelf, I haven't got the time to get to Talk to strangers yet. I wanted to read What the dog saw and I'm about two thirds done and so far it's still interesting, well some stories more than others.

The crater is almost four miles wide, but when the weather is clear you can see jagged hills that surround the town like the walls of a ruined tower. It isn't enough to ask what a clinician could or should have done differently so that he and others may learn for next time. The doctor is often only the final actor in a chain of events that set him or her up to fail. Error experts, therefore, believe that it's the process, not the individuals in it, that requires closer examination and correction. In a sense, they want to industrialize medicine.

When we first looked at Mr. Dill's case a few weeks before his scheduled execution, no court had reviewed critical issues about the reliability of his conviction and sentence. Capital murder requires an intent to kill, and there was a persuasive argument that there was no intent to kill in this case and that poor health care had caused the victim's death.
