The quote, pg 161 does reminds me of the lyrics of Joan Manuel Serrat Cantares, a poem by Manuel Machado rewritten as a song by Serrat from 1969. There's a line that says (translated from the Spanish) When the goldfinch bird won't sing, when the poet is seen as a foreigner (Machado was forced into exile) when prayers are not enough . . .pilgrim, there's no path ahead of you, you make the path as you forge ahead."

Alyosha heard Shukhov's whispered prayer, and, turning to him: "There you are Ivan Denisovich, your soul is begging to pray. Why don't you give it its freedom?"
Shukhov stole a look t him. Alyosha's eyes glowed like two candles.
"Well, Alyosha," he said with a sight, "its this way. Prayers are like those appeals of ours; either they don't get through or they're returned with a 'rejected' scrawled across them."

Everyone dashed to his job. They took Shukhov's hammer from him and wound up his string. The mortar carriers and the block lifters hurried down into the machine room. They's nothing more to do up there. Three masons remained on top -Kilgas, Senka, and Shukhov. Tiurin walked around to see how much wall they'd built. He was pleased. "Not bad, eh? In half a day. Without any fucking lift."
