I am reading this quickly to keep up with that voice but I need to keep putting it down where I can, for if I don’t put it down when and where I can I’ll be caught for another long section of not drawing breath or losing focus until a paragraph end a page away. I am reading this slowly because I need to put it down where I can, so intense it is about the everydayness in this not so every day world.

Nothing much happens in this book but bit by bit we learn more about Eleanor and bit by bit she learns to engage with the world and bit by bit I am becoming interested in her journey and her past.

Eleanor Oliphant is a strange one, an awkward loner with an exaggeratedly formal way of speaking, with no social graces whatsoever and a lack of self awareness that has her judging others on their supposedly poor social skills. I’m finding Eleanor neither charming or funny as others readers have, and having a laugh, if that were possible, would be at her expense.

Page turner. Crazy deluded manipulative stalker. Horrible characters. I so agree with Joe’s opinion of them.

‘You’, who is Beck, the object of the narrator’s obsession seems a bit dippy and her friends are awful (I could do without having to read their carry on). Jo himself is a crazy stalker but Caroline Kepnes deserves 5 stars for the first few chapters alone for capturing that astounding voice.

The beginning of this book is startling due to the voice of the narrator/main character. And even though I have read reviews of the book I was taken by surprise by that warped perspective and was to be happy to be taken for the ride.

Rather than the children uncovering the father’s life, there are backstory chapters from the father’s introspective point of view. There has been little about art, just Noah’s reaction to one painting and Martin mentioning his studio from time to time, a studio that the story has not yet visited.

Up to part 2. Page 83. It was hard to get into, possibly because it was not what I expected and was looking forward to, based on the publisher’s blurb. It is a thoughtful meditation on life and grief.

It is what it is. I started reading it because it is set in my local extended area. But some of the geography is out of date even for 2013 when it was published. There’s quite a bit of fast hard boiled dialogue. I prefer the other bits.
