I've been reading this book on and off for months. I took a break to read the Quran, and came back to it. There's too much information for much of it to cohere (it covers ~1500 years of Islamic writing), but I'm still enjoying bits and pieces of the selections.

Мені цікаво тому, що є багато ідей в цій книжці, яких рано вчать іноземців

Surprised by how much the material circumstances of the Quran's creation show through in the content. The surahs, which are believed to have been revealed to the prophet by the angel Gabriel, are often directly addressing something that happened to the prophet IRL.

It's very repetitive. I suspect it's much more beautiful in Arabic.

This book is a slog, but Hughes has never written a bad book.

I think this is my third time reading this book. It's gotta be a top 10 book for me. Hiroaki Sato is a treasure.

Lots of interesting anecdotes. Sometimes the author's flourish is too much.

Easy reading. Steinbeck seems full of himself, and I probably couldn't stand his company, but I think that's just because pots and kettles aren't meant to be friends

I love Joshua Bowen, and the information is great. Two criticisms:

1) you can listen to the audiobook; the narration is great. However, I don't think you can get the full experience without the book.
2) Joshua is too humble, and he often goes out of his way to clarify that he's not an expert in XYZ or that most of the section is inspired by source XYZ. I appreciate the humility and deference, but it stifles the flow

Not the most thrilling subject, and there's precious little to say about it that isn't self-evident from a short tutorial; however, there are nuances that I was unaware of---just few and far between

It's been inconsistent. The chapter on algebraic data structures didn't sell me on its utility, for example. It felt more like an academic exercise than a useful set of examples.

Really interesting so far. I'm mostly enjoying it because it's bringing me up to speed with C++ features that weren't available the last time I had to do any serious development with the language. That said, it's a nice introduction to some functional programming concepts for folks familiar with C++.

I love the old soviet movie corresponding to "The Night Before Christmas," so it was a treat to finally read that short story. The movie is suprisingly accurate

Meh. Okay so far. It's basically a genre piece smashed into the context of a fictional universe. It's like if someone wrote Harry Potter crime novels
