Really trying to like this. I thought the 1st was good, but the main character is so so unlikeable. The fact that he's the narrator makes it even worse, a spoiled privileged person isn't usually so aware of it, theyre either ignorant or view it as something else entirely. It sounds like someone who hates rich people and has never spent time with one describing how they think a spoiled rich person would think.

I am going to out this one down until we eliminate systemic racism. So I guess forever.

I'm becoming increasingly annoyed with the "Poor public servant accused of being a racist" storyline.
Shawn -the villain- has a very good reason to believe his girlfriend dies because of racism. And yet he's painted as this unhinged, violent drug dealing, abusive pimp. It delegitimizes his very legitimate complaint and makes it easy falsely correlate accusations of racism with "bad people."

I loved this series at the beginning but the writing style is starting to get old. Repetitive. I'm halfway through and it seems like the story is barely getting going and I'm skimming a lot.

I think the author is spending too much time having character self-analyze and those analysis are confused an emotional (which is not necessarily a bad thing in proportion).

WTF is a triple lux? Triple Lutz? The figure skating jump? Are there kinds of figure skating jumps that make you stroke-the-f-out?

This is promising.

It's blasphemous, but I can't help but hope for a Spike/Buffy relationship between Lucien & Patrick. The hate is just so intense that is it imploded, it would be just so... wow

This is 100% not true. I don't know how people still believe this. Why would a cop ever go undercover if they had to admit they were a cop? That's insanely unsafe. A cop can lie about who they are, evidence they have, what people have said, almost anything.

Not to mention the fact that the ACTUAL story is being rushed and neglected to make room for the pages and pages of ranting and debating and vilifying that is the real reason this book was written. I'm skimming the rest.

Christ a bomb? The author is so desperate to make a point about the excess divisive politics, social media, social justice warriors, etc that the story is turning completely absurd and unbelievable just so there's room to say "see, look what could happen!" And the reality is there is no reason to be this ridiculous. This is a caricature of what could and does happen & it's ham-handed and over the top, ugh.

Scratch that....this is devolving into absurdity.

Maybe I actually like it now :)

This is not a romance novel nor is it about BDSM. Marie Sexton's got Opinions and needs to talk about them.

Again, I don't even disagree, but seriously if I wanted to hear about this I'd actually read a book about it or just go on soc-medes myself. Honestly about 75% of this book is ranting about social justice warriors, partisanism, and social media. The actual story is completely obstructed.

Normally I'm down with a book having social context/messaging but this book is really getting annoying. It's just a medium for all of the things the author currently finds annoying. I mostly agree, but I didn't pick up this book to hear about all the things wrong with social media culture or generation X. It's not subtle and ironically reductivist. If I didn't love the characters so much this would already be a dnf.

Ugh Marie, did you have to be a union hater? I love this series and you're making it damn hard to keep going. Stick to kinky love stories and stay away from union busting, sooo many misconceptions. Give me a ring, girl. I'll clear things up for ya!

I hate Hailey. I think she's supposed to come across as a mother hen type but she's really a condescending rude, overbearing bitch with a savior complex.

My god, to people really have family meetings like this where they openly discuss one of their family members like some abstract political issue while they're sitting right there? This is beyond cringeworthy. I seriously hate this family.

The only reason I'm still reading this is hoping that Levi works through the internalized homophobia/sex negativity that his religion pushed upon him. I know personal how complex the family dynamic can be in devote religions like this, but that's no excuse for causing this kind of pain. "We just want the best for you," has been the justification for serious emotional trauma esp among young people with tragic results
