i love that this is just all hockey now. i picked it up because it's supposed to be sad and now i'm treated to this extra special brand of sadness <3 mwah

sixteen pages in and being reminded of a tragedy already (the loss of hockey night in canada) (also yes this is set in ontario so it gets a pass but why do all comic references to hockey always have to be the leafs. don't remind me!!! that team will never love you back! (yes i have two leafs plushies beside me as i write this) go leafs go)

nasen, licht, klöster, LEUCHTTÜRME!!! mit so einem auftakt wird's mit sicherheit durch und durch ein rahelbuch werden

Tried to think of why this last story cycle feels like such a slog and then I checked my short story + novella collection tomes - turns out I already read it when I was reading those and it didn't blow me away then either :(

... My Arrakis, MY DUNE!!!!

I will genuinely be surprised if the blue prince devs didn't use this book as a central inspiration. apart from that: this is SO good. I really like the audiobook narration, too.

filed under: books i will not be reading before bed

Ohhhh this is great already. I love it when houses are characters in books and also I have to think of The Blue Prince already (blame the rumpus room)

Oh I could just live in these stories 🥰

I think I fully checked out 10% ago. 😴 Maybe everything makes more sense once the TV show is out and I've watched the events unfold 🤷🏼‍♀️

I appreciate the atmosphere and I appreciate the world building but maaaaan. This is tedious. This feels like a book my dad would like (no character work and just 120% ideas and world building).

this will be a nice bedtime companion these next few days, i think. nice and moody little snapshot of a city on the pacific coast

I still don't understand how this can be SO tightly plotted yet spent like a full page on a very detailed but also very unnecessary sex scene in the first part of this book.

so far its been a bit of a fever dream. i like the raymond chandler feel of the narration, though

I think people forget that the nice thing about something being unexpectedly soft is that this softness stands in contrast to the harshness of the rest of the world the story presents. If everything is soft...... Then the softness doesn't have the same impact. I'm not convinced by a world where everyone in space has a cozy sweater and leather and- wait did I pay enough attention to know if they can even farm???

Surely a great read for anyone who has never read a single work of sci-fi before (we're copying Changing Planes now without the critique of capitalism inherent to "Great Joy"????)

The middle of the nonfiction book blues struck me again but I think I'm out of the thick of it. Really enjoyed the section on the cloud... And by enjoyed I mean I have been grasped by further despair over the state of technology in the year 2026.

liveblogging this in code (referring to all characters by the names of their mass effect counterparts)

Okay, I'm less of a sceptic now. If this is just a station remodeling story, then I think this has the potential to be fun.

rip aron trask you would have really loved light academia moodboards on pinterest

Somehow this makes me want to revisit To Sleep in a Sea of Stars and if anything, that thought means I need to return to playing Mass Effect again.

For real, though: it's fine so far. I'm interested in seeing where it's trying to go and what plot points will happen but oh boy. I feel like the age of shallow Becky Chambers impersonators is upon us...

i will miss the pencil talk when my time reading east of eden is over, i fear…

nina and alexander 🥲🥲🥲

Aughhhh Steinbeck 😭
