Not really loving this one. The characters are all either annoyingly insensitive or annoyingly helpless. Hoping this will shift somehow!

Bree (AnotherLookBook) is 40% done with The Light Between Oceans
This has been on my TBR list for so many years. I saw it on clearance and decided to finally pick it up. I enjoyed the premise very much at first and tore through the early backstory segments. Progress has stalled out now. It just feels like a drawn out bad situation, created entirely through the characters’ actions. Might call it a day on this one...

It does have a distinctive narrative style. It took me about a dozen pages to adapt, but now that I have it's thoroughly enjoyable.

That moment when I realize that now that my boyfriend works for the University of Texas, he has unrestricted access to their library system. AND that UT seems to have all of Elswyth Thane's novels in their collection. Yesssss.

I wonder when "to make love to" shifted its meaning from courting to, you know, just plain sex. Reading a book from the late '30s, I can confirm that the former meaning was still used then. Thoughts, theories?

Oh Olive Higgins Prouty, you're gonna make me cry! And not from sadness, or the beauty of a love story...but out of admiration for the women who came together and fought so hard for suffrage in this country. Who would have thought this would be my favorite part of the book!

Poor March Cost! Such delicate, nuanced writing...and yet no one seems to have read her books in ages.

In the midst of my new project (restoring an 1869 square grand piano), this book is helping me feel a *little* less crazy.

Help, GR friends! Between moving and starting a new job, I've been too overwhelmed to make it through a book. Now I'm hunting for something to more easily capture my interest. I'm thinking historical fiction, maybe set in the U.S.? Suggestions please!!

Nearly choked on my breakfast! "There were only two things noticeable about him. One was his iron-grey moustache; uncommonly thick, and clipped uncommonly close, the resultant texture something between moleskin and badger, it exactly filled the whole of his upper lip like a strip of fur neatly applied."

Fabulous so far--engaging writing, right from the get-go. I look forward to further developing my latent crush on our Founding Fathers (and admiration for their Ladies). I keep jumping around with books but this seems like a sure winner.

According to another reviewer, it's after these first 50 pages that the story starts to suffer...Which is a shame, because I'm gobbling it up so far. In the fateful coming pages, let's hope my verdict is a favorable one!

"A dream honeymoon for a girl who had been told all her life that she was a nuisance, a bother, a disappointment, not of interest to anyone at all. She knew that she had been a wonderful bride, not just a girl in a beautiful dress and veil. She had come, like shooting star, into the atmosphere that would forever be her own."

"Mr Dutton, if you pick up any fleas, wait until they're gorged, then catch them with a piece of soap," Grania smiled at him delightfully." "Pay no attention. Our dogs have no fleas. I expect it's a tick," Marian said. He was left to puzzle over this sinister remark, afraid to ask questions in case the explanation proved to be too revolting to contemplate.

Aaaaand then a reader comments on your blog that one of your dearly beloved, little known authors was actually her great aunt. SO COOL.

"Others gave the matter little or no thought; while the weather was warm and sunny they enjoyed it as though it would last indefinitely. They fell in love with the wild, rugged beauty of the area, little realizing that soon many of them would die from exposure in the frigid cold that would soon sweep down over the mountain to envelop them in snow and ice."

"Yes, sir! I'm sure I can do it," Kane replied, intrigued by the thought of meeting with a female spy. "But she's probably a homely old crone," he mused.

Oh foolish Kane, when is a female spy EVER a homely old crone???

She topped it off with a big glass of cold milk, fresh from the springhouse. Between the delicious food and Annie's cheerful talk, Claire's spirits rose rapidly."

You know you've read a huge book when...it doesn't fit into the library's return slot.
