Does anyone have any recommendations for books with a snowy setting that were written by Black authors? Or just by authors of color in general? I'm in a wintry mood but have only been able to find snowy settings written by mostly white authors, and I'd like to have more diverse reads than that, particularly as it's Black History Month.

So far this heroine is a white savior who thinks the Chippewa women she works with have to just "get over" their negative reactions to police. She also is a grown woman who thinks she's going to hell for looking at a man's backside, and then has to guiltily unload her conscience on one of the aforementioned women, who dgaf. Off to a great start.

Giving audiobooks a try now that I have a long commute. Not too impressed so far--Dawkins thinks that without religion, everything would be hunky-dory. But his critique seems unbearably white, upper-class male. Various forms of power struggle (racism, imperialism, sexism, etc.) can be harbored by religion but certainly weren't birthed by it. But some passages are still thought-provoking.

hooks spends the whole introduction talking about how she wants this to be an accessible primer for the masses. But so far it's still pretty academic. She uses the phrase "the existing white supremacist capitalist patriarchy" on page 4 (but has only defined the word "patriarchy" thus far) and the word "concomitant" on page 5. This isn't something I think most working class people are going to be able to easily read.

This joins The New Jim Crow as necessary reading about race in America imo.

I'm enjoying this (and learning) way more than I thought I would. It just sucks to know the end of the story--they gave up on socially-responsible capitalism and sold out to Unilever. :(

"I worked at a Fortune 500 corporation for ten years. What attracted me to Ben & Jerry's was that I believe in what Ben & Jerry's believes in. I thought it would be awfully nice to be able to live twenty-four hours a day with the same set of values, not have one set at home and a different set at work." - Todd Kane, purchasing manager
