The short digression about the sultan's passion for mystery and crime novels is quite interesting. Abdul Hamid had a whole army of translators who would translate the newest books and also classics, but what I found curious is he didn't read the books personally - the sultan had a servant, known for nice tone of voice, who would read the books out loud for his majesty. Like some sort of pre-audio books.
