Many of the stories are unresolved, with secrets or revelation that readers will never know as they die with the person narrated in the story. This lingering mystery makes the tales feel even more ghastly than the narration itself, especially when events unfold in ways that are less overtly frightening.

The brother-in-law reads like an "abang2an". The prose is exquisite though, it becomes more impressionistic here, utterly artsy, as if filtered through the in-law's own artistic self-importance. We also see a flicker of agency from Yeong-hye, with her opening up and expressing her kind-of desire.

The husband is an insufferable character. He told us how "normal" his life is with his wife, but the way he perceives her and treats her is anything but normal. So authoritarian and dismissive, oblivious to his violence. Han Kang delivers this with so much eloquence that the husband's restrained narration and his actual actions clatter with a steely dissonance.

Sangat berasa Twilight Zone. Bab dua bagus sekali.

Membaca novel ini seperti membaca komik. Deskripsi kejadiannya seperti menekankan kejadian2 jenaka dan gestur karakter yang lirkartun. Trio karakternya sendiri jenaka. Terjemahan Indonesia-nya berusaha untuk mengikuti pakem Bahasa Jepang aslinya ("Oi!" alih2 "Woi!", juga istilah2 yang tidak diterjemahkan seperti tatami). POV-nya berkisar di antara trio itu, seperti jadi orang keempat yg terjebak di toko kelontong.

Makin ke belakang makin dramatis, dan mungkin nggak terlalu relatable. Sosok Bobby melelahkan - mungkin memang disengaja, karena pasti jauh lebih melelahkan menghadapinya IRL - tetapi sebagai sebuah bacaan detailnya terasa seperti spiral yang tak berujung.

Bahasa Indonesia-nya agak kaku (beberapa terbaca seperti ChatGPT) tapi semakin membaik di bagian-bagian pribadi yang meledak-ledak. Bacaan yang cukup mengganggu sejauh ini dan cukup membantu mengenali pola laki-laki manipulatif.

Just a few minutes into this book and I feel like I'm re-learning my methodology class in a much more efficient manner. Impressive book.

So far a really fascinating read. A thorough insight to the formation of medieval Europe as we know it.
