"You may send a map of my new route to the mental ward at Charity Hospital."

During my brief tenure in the Crescent City, I worked a temporary job at Charity Hospital -- reviewing patient files for Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement eligibility -- before I was unceremoniously sacked by the management consulting duds at Toilet & Douche.

I had forgotten how inappropriate this book is. Inappropriate but funny. Toole's writing manages to make me laugh when I feel that I shouldn't.

I have taken to arriving at the office one hour later than I am expected. Therefore, I am far more rested and refreshed when I do arrive, and I avoid that bleak first hour of the working day during which my still sluggish senses and body make every chore a penance.

While I am enjoying getting reacquainted with Ignatius J. Reilly, reading A Confederacy of Dunces on the heels of The Secret History feels incorrect.

I read this so long ago that I had forgotten 1) what an ass Bunny was, 2) why the 4 chose to murder Bunny, and 3) about the (magaty) Hundy character

Mostly I had forgotten that this book is so beautifully written.

Well, Mathilda Murray is nearly as horrible as her sister.

The pleasant surprise is just how funny this book is. Maybe I am becoming more accustomed to reading classic literature, or maybe Anne Brontë's writing is more humourous and accessible than that of her literary peers.

I just finished the chapter "The Walk". Rosalie Murray is an odious, idiotic, twat. Come, comeuppance, come!

Entertaining and funny. I may buy a copy for my very small personal library. Maybe!

A pro of a marathon dental appointment is that all the downtime is Duolingo and reading time!

Also, Anne Brontë is wickedly funny!

It turns out that reading during jury duty down time was not so easy for me. And post-trial I have lost my reading mojo.

A quick read -- perhaps too quick as I'm barely ⅓ way through my day of jury duty -- in which things happen but sort of nothing happens. Does that make any sense?

Thankfully, it's not heavy on the magical aspect. The wiring is good, simple. It reminds me of the simplicity of Banana Yoshimoto's writing.

We are past the Epstein years, and somehow, reading about the whirlwind marriage (within 10 days of meeting) to Robbie, is more troublesome.

In no way do I fault her for grabbing a chance to escape and find a shred of normalcy, too often it feels like she's trying to convince us (and herself) how wonderful her new life and Robbie are. It feels forced.

Oddly, the abuse stories are easier to read than I had expected. Giuffe and Amy Wallace (collaborator) found the right "voice" -- at least for me. A survivor of SA may say differently.

Like some others, I find the jumps between Giuffe's past and present a bit jolting, as well as the in-line song lyrics. But who hasn't heard some lyrics, taken them out of context, and adopted them as an anthem for hope or change?

I'm in the home stretch! What an interesting book. Hardy is a harsh judge of human character. He's not wrong, but he's written some of the most pitiable characters in one book.
