You know a person is secure in themselves and their decisions when they posit their choices as so much better than those of the people in the neighborhood from whence they sprung. It’s cute when you’re maximum 24. As a grown ass adult with a wife who works at the UN your ass is clearly trying to show someone something. Fucking loser.

This is a very well written engaging book but the fact that I was expecting a disgusting men aré disgusting memoir and not an addiction memoir seems to have triggered a whole lot of still unresolved adult child of alcoholics shit for me that I still have not seemed to be done working through and god damn I was not in the mood to think about anything deeply right now.

It’s really fascinating how white supremacy chooses to continuously platform blonde Mormons and yet the ones that get platformed seem to be uniformly pathological. I’m not saying all Mormons are, just the ones that come to “cultural” “prominence”.

I’m not shaming anyone here, I do think basically everyone is susceptible to some form of coercive control but how on earth is an Italian evangelical man in Idaho obsessed with the mafia not a huge red flag?? I can visualize the poor table manners on this dude, you know?

I have never seen an episode of one tree hill. I like cult stories esp weird Christian ones. But she’s talking about these actors so I went to Reddit and these allegedly successful actors and musicians I am sorry who the fuck are these people? Are they like, evangelical famous?

Parts of this are reminding me of the bad writing on law and order svu where someone randomly interjects with a statistic to move the plot along. “Well you know, 87% of gen x white women with liberal arts backgrounds do hate their husbands but learn how to cover it up”

I am very partial to memoirs of New York art scenes anywhere between 1920 and 1990 especially when there are random pop ups of other artists incongruously and garland Jeffreys giving Chris stein a pep talk in a ymca while going on trips from the psych ward is exactly the kind of anecdote I live for.

This is an exhausting person to be inside their head. That is also a grammatically bad sentence and I apologize for it.

Any man who shows up for literally a paragraph gets a full name and any woman except for like 2? so far gets “girlfriend”. I suppose he captured 70s leftism well, then. If forçade’s Wikipedia page were just *slightly* longer I’d have given up by now

My favorite kind of book is “memoir written by interesting person immersed in multiple artistic ‘scenes’ for lack of a better word” and my favorite part of *that* kind of book is when someone completely random and bizarre shows up (see, uma Thurman as a toddler in John Giorno’s book). Was NOT EXPECTING the Stanley crouch cameo!

Also I often wonder about these I’m doing motherhood wrong compared to people on instagram: who will you be once your kid starts making their own choices? Will you be calmer?

So I am old and also most likely an asshole. But JAYSUS this dude seems fucking intolerable. I am admittedly the antithesis of the outdoor adventure type and all, but there’s something so intensely American about someone talking about I believe in the unknown and spirituality blah blah BUT NAKED INDIA CAVE DWELLING WILL FIX ME. Can we agree that the person who thought keeping a young woman prisoner in an empty because her fragile imaginary boyfriend was butthurt about getting dumped was a good way to prove that she would be a good mommy should probably not be a mommy? Like maybe stop at plant parenthood?
