Wow!! This book is so psychologically thoughtful. I'm generally interested in retelling of fairy tales, villian origin stories, etc, but this one really has the stuff. Impressed

No spice yet, but a very cozy atmosphere. Ahhh... I love the audiobook reader, clearly having a lot of fun with the job.

I'm all for a gay, rural, New Zealand romance, but then I saw a "you deserve sunshine" reference 😍😍

What a culture this is, the fantasy books of women authors, writing gay men love stories.

Sigh... A utopian community, cut off from the rest of the world, but absolutely no discussion of food gathering, preparation, tools, first aid, laundry, etc.
I want to be pulled in, immersed!

I love the writing. She has a great ear for a musical sentence. But I find the outdoors parts bland. I have to keep reminding myself that most writers who write about wildness have not lived outdoors.

Still, I love a mother/daughter criminal story.

I think this is my favorite of her books. All of her work is funny, beautiful, philosophical, curious. But this is the most philosophically interesting to me. Lots about death, ecology, transcendentalists and the self.

I wanna reread and reread it.

This book is so ridiculous that I laugh out loud. I needed the laugh. And I'm hoping that the hinting at the political organizing of the "non citizens" of this magical world will turn into a more interesting plot . It's quite the "merging lovers" fantasy

It's kind of the story of fawning, self harming by trying to get everyone to not be upset with you.

But it mostly makes me think of Katherine May's, "The Electricity of Every Living Thing", a late diagnosed autism memoir.

I appreciate the honesty of this book, but far more appreciate the quality of the writing.

If virgin/beast fantasy is your thing, this is one of the better written paranormal romance books I've ever read.
Well paced, vivid atmosphere descriptions, believable characters.
I'm so delighted when the romance genre gets a high attention to writing detail.

I don't know why I thought I wouldn't like it. The cover unnerved me. The strength of the hate against her has always felt like a forewarning against young women who take up space.

But I love it, of course. Great writing. Funny, clever, curious.
She came of age as an artist during one of my favorite eras of feminist comic writing. We are so lucky she wants to share anything with us.

Whole lotta name dropping.

Fun though. I like the jokes and the painful awkwardness.

The beginning feels a bit like someone trying to prove they really are serious about film. I believe you. Your work speaks for itself.

I'm irritated by the sentiment of girl power books. She's abused. Tough. Ongoing threat of violence. Very little internal processing.

It could be more compelling with a bit more reflection and less injury obsessive writing.

Ignore the cover. It's an amazing book, though the writing in the second book (Magic Possessed) is stronger. I think it's a great beginning

Think Bourne Identity series meets Harry Potter, but also... dark romance? Heavy on assassins, dragons, and magic. I want to study this book for tension and plot building.

I wish it were a little less "captive young girl" kink writing, but it's very of its time in that way.

The message so far is: women exercise to make their bodies stronger, more resilient, and increased stamina. It is a radical, recent, and feminist idea.

I also like the parts where she mentions exercise clothes as radical, because no girdle! Clothes with give

It gets awfully dark. But I'd read it again. The mother daughter relationship is haunting. And, even if the portrayal of poverty feels a little myopic, I love a girl gang mystery with a Judas plot.
And the love story feels slow growing but beautiful.
