Finally it’s getting a bit of pace.
Bring on Regina (George) Kate Middleton!

I really hope this goes full Dynasty row.

This book could have been the meme read of 2020 if only it were pacier.

It needs a lot of editorial pruning and then it could be a sensation of the ‘lace’ or ‘valley of the dolls’ variety.

As it is, it drags too much to be entertaining.

I strongly dislike the mere notion of monarchy so I would be very open to embrace the hutzpah of this couple if only they written with personalities.

Still reading this for book club and that’s the only reason.
It is agonisingly bad.
And not only is it bad but I also find it a bit perverted.

The adolescent erotic scenes were deeply creepy and objectifying because they seemed like they were for the reader’s gaze.

Well this book is hilarious.
So far the thing that most tickled me is the idea that a ginger man with a team of servants who attend to his every need had to be told by the sage Meghan to wear sunscreen in Botswana,

This really tickled me and is telling of the bizarre habit of royal correspondents to give the noble classes credit for the most inane of accomplishments.

Great. I find it really interesting that they so commonly used almond milk and abstained from meat as I tend to think of it as more modern ideas.
Can’t wait to make Rose pudding.

Really sweet. Just a little pamphlet but it has lovely old pictures in it.

I love how snappy Tan’s prose is.
Tan’s protagonists often have more Jan a touch of the downtrodden about them. It’s a bit different with this main character, Ruth is utterly incapable of communicating with everyone around her. I suspect that her mother will turn out to be the true protagonist once we switch to her narrative.

*Possible mild spoiler *

The timeline on the third person’s age doesn’t make any sense. Surely she should be significantly older than Eddie’s dad? Or was her husband meant to be at least 20 years older than her? If so, why not mention it? The passage of time on the pier seems pretty central to her story. I’m confused.

I’m also not sure how satisfactory this whole Lomé of argument is.
