I love how snappy Tan’s prose is.
Tan’s protagonists often have more Jan a touch of the downtrodden about them. It’s a bit different with this main character, Ruth is utterly incapable of communicating with everyone around her. I suspect that her mother will turn out to be the true protagonist once we switch to her narrative.
