“A pause so pregnant it delivers, consumes its own spawn, then grows big with child again.”

The prose in this is fabulous, Bunny.

She’s not dead yet! She’s getting better! (Now I have an urge to rewatch Monty Python and the Holy Grail 😂)

“There’s someone standing in the corner. Someone just behind her. If she turns to look, it won’t be there. The corner will be empty. But if she doesn’t look, the thing will continue to stand there. Not breathing, not moving. Just watching her. Always.”

I finished the third chapter and yeah. That was sorta wild I guess. If you don’t have any experience in like, aO3 or fanfics. But this fourth chapter? What in the Elon Musk is this???

This book is wild.

Tananarive Due and Paul Tremblay are masters for a reason. I think their stories (“The Boat Man” and “The Story I Tell is the Story of Some of Us”) are gonna be top tier. They’re definitely my two favs from this section so far (although the one about the Grateful Dead fan trying to return Jerry Garcia’s finger was pretty funny).

So far the most original concepts are “Grace” (astronauts stuck in space!) and “The African Painted Dog” (what would happen to the poor zoo animals??).
There are others that have good reflection/commentary on how people might cope with the fall of society but not the most original in story beats or setting.
Props to Lebbon and Ward (my beloved) for doing something different!

I’m reading this through an email subscription (same people as Dracula Daily) and I gotta say I am really debating on DNFing/unsubscribing. They recently had a long hiatus because the book itself had a long pause in dates between correspondences. And the one today was just still absolutely boring as hell. I’ve chuckled very mildly perhaps twice over the last 2 months? I don’t think it’s worth it…

“The rest of the world fell away, and she was on a dark island in this one precious moment when her father’s anger was directed at someone else, when Sen was perfect for him.”

I am seated. Shook. Enthralled. The complex “daddy issues” feels of this book…damn. I usually am only struck by complex motherhood exploration. Especially in horror. Baker is incredible.
