My expectations, when I began to read this, were fairly limited. After all it was an edited transcript of 70 hours of recorded interviews made when Proust's maid was 82, recalling events that had occurred nearly 60 years previously. Nevertheless as an À la recherche… addict (presently part way through a second reading) I was intrigued. I needn’t have worried; after the first few pages I was completely hooked!
