Interesting to listen to this book in audio-format. Reads as though a formalised podcast with the flow of dialogue between hosts.

I love the exploration of convicted and witnesses with motives through academic critical and feminist lens. Defintely what separates it from a podcast which functions very much on "and then this happened, and then that happened" type explaining of trials and crime.

feeling conflicted - I wish this book was the first release of the (now) saga - I think it feels a little bit nostalgia bait / rehashing a lot of information based on the fact its a prequel to a very well known universe. But I don't think that would have worked... Haymitch's perspective is strong, but depends on the readers knowledge and anticipation of what coming in 25yrs with Katniss and co.

The introduction and translators note are a little book in themselves - read some of it and wil be back to read those ... I got so excited to start the story!!

Somehow Emily has made this story feel so contemporary - or maybe its Homer... a tale as old as time, some could say.

Interesting narratorial perspective. Unexpected storyline. I love that I cannot foresee what will happen next.

Reminds me a little of Moshfegh - whomst I love so very glad! Also happy to know that this book was published before Eileen - they feel like distant cousins in some way. Yet Cynthia is rooted in action with her delusion and strangeness.

Very original and gripping.

But it is clear this is a debut novel
