" The car that could catch a stolen Ferrari could not help him up."
Typical Patchett wit right thru the end of the book.

The Underground Railroad
The Story is as sad as ever. Travels from Georgia up through South Carolina for Cora and others willing to see what they heard from stories passed from other slaves. She would have to see things for herself if her mind would hold what she barely could imagine.

A Little Life
The vivid conversations and adventures between 4 male friends is part of this novel set in NYC. The varied life experiences each has already had makes them build within themselves a story of who they are to each other now, I think.

Oh this going to take awhile. But I think I am going to really love it because the prose is exceptional!

I may not end my read as I keep going back to reread and then forget where I last stopped. I have been at it for over a year. I guess I am floating around in midstream.

...in the wake, forfeiting my deposit and my cafe. I didn't mind. The solitary hours I'd spent drinking coffee at the card table, awash in the radiance of my cafe dream, were enough for me. I so get that.

Strange Loyalties
This is great writing. I think of R. Chandler but not as gruff maybe. I have a ways to go. "Unamuno says something like: if a man loses his sense of his own continuity, he's had it. His bum's out the window. Sorry Miguel, if I'm not quoting accurately."

This is a book I keep reading thru very slowing as much to absorb. I do not see an end to my enjoying it so will keep reading as I have over the last year some chapters over and over. It's cheese cake a thin slice brings great pleasure. Wish I could take more but sure I would not be able to digest it.

Such a way with the back and forth of truthful interaction. But his art is in simply lines.

Almost to last chapter. Such an unusual book, psychologically gets a bit much but I'm tough.

Going slowly slowly , I like the outdoor scenes in the telling of these two lives , White's and Helen's. Best intense descriptions of practicing with their hawks along side the intense internal work within themselves. On to Part 2...

The story is phenomenal. Reading each chapter at least twice.
