Chapter 11: I feel like I've hit the point where I have to re-read the series before the next book. I forget a lot of the details about Shalan's story and keeping track of the names is proving difficult.

This book is being read, chapter by chapter, by Phoebe Judge, the host of the Criminal podcast. Her voice is great, but I’ve found I can’t use it to fall asleep to: too engaging.

Cate is starting Why We Can't Sleep: Women's New Midlife Crisis
Reading chapter 10 on social media: "Social media doesn't just make us feel bad about our looks. It also--as we hear so often--makes us ashamed of our imperfect lives. Facebook does this, experts say 'by...inviting constant comparisons in which we tend to see ourselves as the losers.'"

I find that I'm more worried about complaining too much on FB rather than looking perfect.

Cate is starting The Warrior's Apprentice (Vorkosigan Saga, #2)
An old favorite. The first time I read this book I stayed up all night and finished it. This time, I only read 2/3 of it and stoped after he successfully won a battle. Knowing all that is ahead for the characters only made it more poignant. I cried when I read Miles remembering his suicide attempt and as they uncovered more about Elena's mother.

(technically reading the Young Miles combined edition)

Cate is starting Selfish, Shallow, and Self-Absorbed: Sixteen Writers on The Decision Not To Have Kids
So I had to stop reading this one for a couple of reasons: my loan expired, but I was also getting depressed reading it. So I'm on a break, but will return to it later.

I'm actually reading the free project Gutenberg edition, but this is the same translator, Maude. So far, we're at a boring party.

Apparently, even late humanists like Porrgio praised the Classics to such an extent that they didn't even like Petrarch or Dante.

Two chapters in and it is revealed that we don't know who sent this guy or where exactly he went. If only the author wasn't so focused on negging the middle ages perhaps he could choose a more interesting premise for this book.

About to start the poet's tale. I don't much like poetry but I'm intrigued by this character and I this his story will reveal important things about the meta plot.

pull quote "Let [your clothes] know you care and look forward to wearing them when they are next in season." I'd heard the author was into this treating objects like they have emotions, but it it's a bit odd to read.

I'm listening to this one and I've gotten to one of the parts where the narrator lists out all the many 80s media that he studied in order to better understand the game's creator. I can only conclude that the game creator/maybe-Ernest-Cline was something of a misogynist. ALL of the SSF authors he mentions are men. So are all the directors. The closest thing he come to including a women is mentioning Star Trek.

Questions still to be answered: why were German kings elected anyway? Fun thing I've learned, religious "princes" were created by transferring imperial land into the hands of abbeys and bishopric. Emperors considered those appointees more reliable than hereditary secular lords.
