totally unexpected emotions when Adam wrote to his brother :( :(

This book makes me realize that I'm a bad humanist. I could care less about the Shakespeare and the Proust references. And despite this super interesting story and plot, the Illiad is still dumb & boring! But the anthropology in this book is great. I like the disorienting and strange situations the characters face, figuring out their place between techno-futures/apocalyptic-pasts.

pretty great airplane reading

I rather like this book and I look forward to reading it before bedtime, but SETI as the method of "first contact" in a scifi novel is pretty dated. Also some writers are better at hiding the "miraculous coincidences" that drive the plot and put the characters together in a room (or spaceship), but it is very transparent here.

started rocky but just got interesting. written in 1988 and the Madonna references are cringe-worthy. but, the frustration of having to live your life all over again from age 14 *multiple times* is horrifying. the main character's angst carries the book thus far.

starting to feel like the Da Vinci Code for nerds. But I love the nuclear powered cyborg dogs.

I'm on page 50 of 468 of Snow Crash: well this book confirms my theory that facebook is the most boring use of the internet ever. it destroyed all wild, fun, imaginative visions that this book had (and other 90's speculation about what the internet COULD BE in the future)

"Lyndon" was completely engrossing!

might not finish this one. Started off great then became a big bore.

so I think I'm just going to read nothing but DFW for the rest of 2012.

there is just something about Banks - I can't put my finger on it. He's not a remarkably original SF writer. He uses a lot of the staples (drones, body doubles, talking ships) but his writing just pops off the page so that every sentence surprises me in how it was worded. It's not gorgeous prose, but it's distinctive.

this novel is pure bliss

Sad I missed the women's studies colloquium on this book at my university. I bet it was a good discussion of the books problems. Nothing gets to the heart feminism, power, and difference than domestic work. I admit I hold this book to an impossibly high standard.

so far the writing is comparable to a C+ undergraduate paper on race/gender

still wrestling with this monster...
