guess I'll kill this beast.

might not finish this one. Started off great then became a big bore.

there is just something about Banks - I can't put my finger on it. He's not a remarkably original SF writer. He uses a lot of the staples (drones, body doubles, talking ships) but his writing just pops off the page so that every sentence surprises me in how it was worded. It's not gorgeous prose, but it's distinctive.
