this is another case of the author wrote a regular plain contemporary then ctrl+replaced a couple words with fantasy things, isn't it

The story is a 4, but the audiobook is ALL FIVE STARS ENDLESSLY.

Yes, I am easily swayed by actually writing radio music stings, or recording bleeps, or full voice cast, PLUS it's the adorable va who read The Honeys which was just so GOOD I love his voice.

Gold, this audiobook. Purely sticky gold.

I don't know why the second half revelation tossed me into disinterest, but it sure did.

There has to be a book out there that'll hold my interest and draw me out of my bookslump the whole way through. I was hoping Durst would be it, but I should have known horror wouldn't do it, I end up groaning and picking holes in the implausibility too easily.

There was a LONG pause in the audiobook mid dialogue as the narrator went to check a scientific name pronunciation hahahahah

Starting to suspect kingfisher has One protagonist. Quirky self abasing unconventional slightly snarky in their own head but very aware of the space they fill anxious.

It would be fine if I wasn’t reading so many kingfisher back to back trying to get out of a book slump.

"I'm never going to pee again."

I don't know why this just. Isn't working. It's probably the narrator, but I just can't vibe about these characters.

I have to read this for work but believe me when I say it sure isn't helping me get out of my book slump. This book sucks. Sigh. Agonizing characters, juvenile writing, a plot ripped from Attack on Titan. I'm so irritated by this book.

There it is. The yearning for what you had as a kid and can’t ever go back to. That’s it. That’s the core of this book, and that’s lovely. (Page 207 of the ebook, when I need to talk to my bookclub about this moment)

I’m not sure I like how dennard writes. It just feels sorta flat.

starting over. the audiobook was using inflections for dialogue that I wouldn't have used. I feel like I would have said a lot of lines differently, so I think I should read it myself.

MUCH better as a book than an audiobook. Part One was frankly breathless, and I loved that, while I couldn't even get halfway by listening. No matter what I'm gonna have to ding a star for how bad the audio experience is.
