This mentions that Scottish and some Northern English of the era believed the first person across the threshold of the house impacted the family's fortunes in the new year. Given that my family has both English and Scottish (and a few other things) ancestry, I guess that's where my Grammy got the idea that a dark haired man should be the first to cross the threshold in the new year for good luck.

Heads up: I just got a friend request from an account pretending to be author Judy Blume. The friend request said she wanted to "share ideas" (totally not money, I'm sure...). The account was just created this month, is a regular Goodreads user account instead of an author account, and has Blume's headshot and bio on it. At the point of me posting this, it has 4 friends and 24 books. I blocked and reported it.

Heads up: I got a friend request from a user called "Patty Fee" but her whole About Me description is a promotion for author services. I can't find any professional presence online, not even a social media, and the profile pic is a generic photo of a woman from a free image website. I suspect that if you accept her request, she'll start DMing you about her fake services. I chose to block and report.
