this is such a fever dream, I keep feeling like I'm hallucinating certain parts as I'm reading them

It’s getting really tiring to deal with Evans’ habit of blaming communists every chance he gets, up to petty attempts at comparing their street warfare tactics to brownshirts, while he clearly worships the social democrats. It’s the smug arrogance of a liberal centrist who thinks he is the apolitical arbiter of truth and no one can accuse him of holding on to any ideology.

So far, quite breezy to read. I'm annoyed that Evans just barely skims the surface of the German revolution in a dismissive, ultralib way. He might as well have completely ignored it.

This rarely happens and I love it. I didn't want to start reading this (or any other) book right now, but I just plucked it from the shelves in my favorite bookstore, scanned a couple of pages, and Bourdain's particular irreverent and frank writing grabbed me like the fucking reaper. I now can't put it down.

Kudos to Lykiard for this translation, it certainly isn't an easy job to bring along the chaotic beauty of this prose to another language.

This is lovely and all, but it's reminding me of the dense encyclopedias I used to read as a child, when I constantly wanted to know more and was left with a lingering sense of dissatisfaction at the end of every entry. It's less a deep dive and more a chronological snapshot of concepts and ideas.

I've been noticing the buzz for a while, but among the buzz someone mentioned this book being "Burgessian Gothic" and now I have to know.

Bought this edition for Xavier's foreword and his lovely attempt at curating the best of gothic literature in these editions. You can never go wrong with Lovecraft.

Jumped over to give this a re-read first while I had already started Limits of Horror.

I thought I wouldn't enjoy this as it would lack the kindling poignancy of Fisher's prose, but reading the lectures in such a raw format, almost being able to see him walk rather nervously in front of the class, my heart breaks time and time again.

I can't stop reading. Send help.
