Dorothy’s back, and this time she has a hen, Billina, and a mechanical man, Tiktok (I’m sure it’s coincidence), to help her out.

This is one of Betty’s early novels, and it shows.

This is the first of Betty’s vague, older men that I’ve rolled my eyes at for being an ass. He’ll redeem himself, of course, but only after being an ass to our competent heroine a few more times.

Our heroine is once again self-sufficient, but she’s also 30 (!) and already engaged when the story begins. Our hero is older, vague, and drives a Rolls Royce, but he’s also a father. Wild stuff here.

The perimenopause jokes are pretty good.

I’ve finished Betty’s story. Another considerably older, wealthy doctor who’s vague about his feelings, but this time our very competent heroine isn’t put-upon with at least one dead parent, which is a nice change.

I’ve never heard of the author of the second story, but I’m going to read it anyway.

When I have other things I need to do (e.g., sleep, be wife/mom, work, etc.), I limit myself to one chapter each time I open a Kingfisher book because she’s just *so good*.

I now have Burney and Radcliffe collections on my not-a-kindle (suck it, bezos) e-reader.

As the author intends, I am making a list of books I need to read as a result of reading this one.
