how do you guys feel about introductions to classic works, anyway? i tend to read them after finishing the work, usually, because i find they “spoil” not only the plot of the work but also sometimes the conclusions im meant to pull from it and im not a fan of being dictated what im meant to take from a piece beforehand but that does defeat the purpose of the introduction giving context to the work

i need a book i can listen to while doing chores aka a book that doesn’t take up too much brain capacity to follow along with and the completionist in me feels like i should read this so that ive done the whole series. which is what ill do

knowing a language a little bit is always about wondering whether you know it enough to read a book in it… probably not but like. what if i tried though.

cause the way rin thinks about and talks to and is talked to by kitay and nezha makes it very clear who the intended boyfriend is, but it’s interesting that altan plays like a minor role here too in the way of confusion for rin bc she’s not sure what to feel for him… but the rin/nezha intended gf/bf dynamic having MORE romantic parallels in altan/chaghan is CRAZY 😭 like we get it, they’re in love 😭

i think kuang isn’t even that subtle about it but the parallels are still funny bc i just realised that when we first see chaghan, altan is saving him knight on white horse saving the princess style (first time we see chaghan and i was already picking up on the vibes like… can’t fool me) which is the exact thing altan denies rin for nezha when the federation sends the poison gas on the beach so nezha is taken

i also say this bc im obviously obsessed with the relationship between altan and chaghan like there’s something here that is crazysauce extreme version (why does chaghan know about every gruesome detail of altans life and why isn’t altan surprised he does when rin mentions it… hmmmm! yaoi detectives, we got a case!!!!!!!) and also bc rin is clearly in love with nezha and vice versa so let them at it!!!

i think what id love to come out of this mess is for rin to think of altan more as a brother or cousin, someone she feels connected to infinitely but like family much more than romantically bc i think that’s a far more interesting dynamic for them… both her and altan caring for each other like siblings

everything to do with the war is of course horrible which contrasts wildly with rin adapting some sort of jealousy stance towards chaghan over his obvious intimacy with altan (“no one touched altan like that” “their faces were so close their noses almost touched” “it was altan whom chaghan seemed bonded to” etc) and the subsequent break up between them which rin feels means she’s filling his role now

i mean specifically the idea of someone new showing up to an existing group, growing close with everyone, seemingly developing seemingly required feelings for the leader bc ofc and then someone who’s been part of the group forever and was gone on some mission comes back and the mc learns what true loyalty and devotion looks like via how the leader acts about that person

the way we have this setup of rin and altan in this weird siblings slash will they won’t they thing and then the moment chaghan shows up altan is out there risking his life for him… it won’t be like that but i actually love that trope so much, there’s something so achy and satisfying about it

not a big fan of the way exposition on the history of the city and the occupation situation is done bc rin keeps showing she has gaps in knowledge that she would not be having after studying at sinegard for as long as she has… keeps taking me out every time she asks why and the answer is something she should know
