Such a great book. I have lots to say - more than the 400 characters allows in this wee update.

Started this months ago, then bereavement and MSc assignments got in the way. Have picked it up again now and am finding it very emotional and quite a difficult read. As I follow Rebanks' family fortunes I think of my own family's dairy farm and the struggles they went through and decisions they made. All gone now. Then there is the environmental journey which is so maddening. Feeling rather depressed.

Book raised questions of culture - a population of c 175000 and so many wordsmiths. Obvs not much diversity due to geography, politics (Black US servicemen prohibited at the base) and time. Pros and cons. Wish Cumbria had a stronger tradition for words. Has it been lost? Is it there but so diluted? What price do we pay (if any) for diluting our cultures/embracing diversity? Very apt cf contemporary Japan.

I’m pretty sure I read most of this book back in 2014 when I bought it newly-published. But I think this time I am reading it more thoroughly and actually considering doing her 6 week programme. Although - saying that, I have been doing meditation practice via the Calm app for a few years, so I’m not wholly new to this malarkey

Reading for the local Bookclub but am not feeling it at all. Posh people post WW1 *yawns*

A couple of chapters in and it’s such an easy, pleasurable read. Saying that, I have had to look up three words already, so I’m pretty glad I got the Kindle version which makes looking them up a doddle.

Hopefully I’ll wiz through this as a boon for having 10 days of self isolation. Thank you Covid.

So far I feel I can give myself a pay on the back - I already do plan meals and write a list and shop accordingly. Might try the Olio app and the B&M app.
