Hmm. I’m sure there’re metaphors I missed but I’m.. not sure about this book lol. Reminds me of by the river pietra (?) I sat down and wept. Of a life gone by. But the writing is good and sort of dreamy and carries you along, like a Murakami. I’d like to think this was a good book but I just didn’t get it. Cos it’s so unique and poignant and I wish I could say it touched me in some way!

Let only the red flower bloom made me interested in contemporary Chinese politics! I wonder which 3 books on that David read last year. In the intro the author said Chinese people and American people are very alike. Wrong my guy have you met Italians?!

Did some reading lake side in Yosemite, a very non-gothic setting but the story still transported me. Cya hendaya 👋

Insane. Infuriating. And impotent. Is how I feel. Feel kinda ashamed for not having kept up. Especially the 2019 HK protests. I literally lived through it. I literally was there. I saw Eilly during her protest at the HK airport. Never bothered to find out how things ended up. Even though I didn’t choose to uproot myself I’d say I finished the job pretty good. Engrossing but in the worst way. Complicated feelings

The Nolan family finally caught a break! Listening to the end on the drive up to Yosemite and during parts of the hike and had a smile on my face the whole time (despite the suffering: carpool’s AC broke and all the never ending ups and tree falls). This book is like a meandering river, life through thick and thin, tough but also tender… I think in the end I grew to love it, sad to see it end.

Finished a few days ago and forgot to log. I guess the most I can say is to each their own. This author clearly has some very specific kink and that doesn’t have to be my kink ._. I didn’t even really like Jessica and max’s story I don’t know why I finished this one lol.

Like it so far! But pls don’t go Murakami on me now 😵‍💫

I know it’s a different kind of book but the Betty smith diary(?) is so flat and colorless and one dimensional compared to the Ann Frank diary, which was vivid and poignant and deep. Still not over the end of the Ann Frank book.. I must be the only person on earth that did not have the ending spoiled for her. Just the abject silence after the last entry, after they were taken.. and the pointless deaths… :(((((((

What is wrong with this author ;_; and what is wrong with me that I’m still reading ;_;

Feels like a continental TM movie lol. I think there’s a reason I don’t typically enjoy male authored thrillers :p

I suppose no one gets to the end of this without crying. What an incredible person, with a level of emotional maturity and introspection that I dont know if I have at 34. And her patience and compassion for humanity despite what was happening. Brilliant as well, and funny. I think the abrupt end of her diary (the topic of the last entry too), and how close they were to liberation… just really extra wreck me…

She’s so mature and insightful… I think poverty and hardship do force you to grow up faster. She was such a force of life and light. The diary’s tone is very light but it’s heavy to read. My heart breaks for the girl in the annex :(

Not a great hiking listen. The audiobook narrator is kinda monotonous and the lack of a plot, the droning on, the heatwave… kinda put me to sleep coming down cucamonga peak 😅 great character study and maybe I’m just uncultured but where’s the plot 😭

Service - kinda rushing to be done. It’s addicting but the MMC is so ass. He’s like only the bad things about Max and x100. I’m not saying I need to understand all the motivation since even Caleb in IICHY lost me sometimes, but Caleb was always compelling and you never doubted he was devoted and cared for Orla in his own way. But this Elias guy is just like. Evil for no reason. Unredeemable and annoying.

I guess I’m mostly confused who this book is for. Reads like a YA fiction (the stuff about the outfits is straight from carnival), with Stephen king style political digs. I read a lot of Kate Quinn so I’m probably her target demo of adult, female, educated, liberal, historical fiction lovers, but are any of us not already library lovers against book bans…? The midnight library is better lol.

Ok silly little book is now an attack on bureaucracy. It was reading exactly like carnival for a second 😅

Hmm bit of a cute young adult fiction

Ok I was supposed to be off my questionable dark fics bullshit but alas I am back. Out of curiosity I opened a fanfic of a fanfic (?) written by someone in the comments of the last fic and now I can’t stop 💀 this is called Service written by TOTKO.

Unbelievably colorful cast of characters! Feels like they exist outside of time and place and silly man made things like laws or bills… as long as napkins are served at 4:45!!

Omg this book is a hoot 😆 “thanks from the bottom of our interracial baby’s dead little heart” 😆

So very upsetting also this author had no work boundaries! (takes one to know one…) the Myanmar stuff is the most upsetting. No surprise that Facebook is so evil but still hurt to read about the human cost.
