I love that the characters all speak over each other like in real life. I love that this 160 page play is to be performed in 90 minutes. However! Really hard to read on a page!

Super glad I read we don't know ourselves before reading this or I would probably be quite thrown off about the historical importance and modern rejection of catholicism in ireland

Me reading this going 😮 why did no one tell me this in acting classes. You can't plan to feel a certain way! You can't make yourself feel particular emotions because you're a human being! That's what playing the objective is about. It's improv with given circumstances! Anyway shoutout to Rhea Seehorn for mentioning this in interviews and shoutout to my library for having one ebook copy of it.

It's interesting but I hate when pop history books tell you things like, "he wiped the sweat from his brown before [doing such and such thing we actually have a record of]." Like you don't know that. You imagined it!

So either that (my previous update) or it's making me think that we are as blasé about caffeine as they were about meth and maybe caffeine is a fascist tool of capitalism 🤔 and I'm only like 30% joking

I feel like he's treating as self-evident that meth is bad so he can point at people going "wow I love meth" and go omg they're crazy when the actual experience of reading this book is *vague memory of him saying what long-term use does to the body and brain* *account after account of how awesome meth is*

Finally reading the rest of this four years after my global crime and corruption class assigned parts of it. Already developing my hot take that it actually makes a lot of sense that drugs we criminalize today (heroin, meth, cocaine) were widely available over the counter in preparations for adults and children. They were wildly effective! And also some of the first effective drugs! Scoffing at the old folks is silly

Okay so I like and find interesting that the different cultures in this world have different gender arrangements, but there doesn't seem to be any explanation as to why. What led to the stakhi having more distanced relations or the oriati having a third gender or the taranoki having polyandrous marriages? Gender relations, as power relations, don't appear out of nowhere and hesychast's eugenic explanations are bad.

heaven help me she's called the universe queer and has mentioned a spouse (exactly that word—no gender mentioned. It's a man). Like bro just say your husband 🙄

it sometimes feels like the oriati mbo culture is mary-sueified but also whatever it's nice to have some cultural element in this be, like, worth rooting for. but also woah you have multiple genders and your social system is based on generosity and kindness and the people you're fighting want to institute a eugenics program and rule your land? who should I root for here 🤔

The first book had very obvious parallels to historical empires/ideas. The second continued and acknowledged its connections to the real world in the end acknowledgments. This third one fully starts with a blurb about vasco de gama. Yes, Mr. Dickinson I understand that this series is actually secretly about our world I got that from the eugenics/hygiene as oppressive tools and central banking policy parts

This book is making me come to a conclusion that I thought I was "too enlightened" to have, which is that butch/femme culture is conservative and regressive. :/ alas I think fetishizing gender roles can't be anything but

I wish I hadn't fead high femme camp antics before reading this, because I think this book is well written and uses the subjectivity of the MC as a fascinating lens. Unfortunately I hated the essay (it feels like the author is living an entirely parallel life to mine) and also the book is exhausting even if well written

I'm starting to 🤔 at some of the data here and there (saying GDP is majorly flawed because it doesn't include unpaid labor and then talking about the success of childcare programs in relation to the GDP gains they'd produce) but still... the kind of book that makes you want to grab "society" by the shoulders and shake it and cry, "why are we letting this happen??"

Admittedly I have not partaken in middle grade fiction for quite awhile but not sure this is for me. I think every single character seems like a kate mckinnon sketch character. In fact, it all seems like a kate mckinnon sketch, which makes sense, but I'm not used to sketches going this long. The jokey asides per minute are so high compared to my usual fare (see first sentence).
