The problem with this book is that they do very little to convince the reader that the characters are competent. It's like there's one brain cell, and Kate's dad is the only one who ever hold it.
I understand the use of Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass trope. This was just Crouching Moron, sans Badass

This book should have started at page 73.

It's been a while since I've read a book this mind-numbingly awful.

xi-- fitting that first memory is of lies and brutality (execution)
xiii-- surprising still brainwashed
1-- how did he break his programming?
3-- "never forget"
"North Korea's labor camps have now existed twice as long as the Soviet Gulag and about twelve times longer than the Nazi concentration camps" (4)
10-- unreliable narrator, then
"many others in the camps have endured similar or worse hardships..." (12)

"A bullet only costs about two cents, and anybody can afford that."
