This is a really interesting book so far. 50% in and no werewolves yet (foreshadowing wolf howls notwithstanding), but a lot of interesting character development and plenty of details of what life inside prisons is like.

Ew, vampires. If it were anyone other than Hailey Turner I'd consider putting it aside, but she and Gary Furlong's narration at least make the story entertaining.

Wow, I absolutely love the turns of phrase the author uses here.
"He was in the mood to not talk with anyone and, as sometimes happened, felt perversely like surrounding himself with people to not-talk to." and
"It didn't take long to become so accustomed to something that you could describe the exact shape of its absence."

Good: Decent depiction of a gray-asexual character.
Bad: Almost everything else.

Lordy but this is slow going. I would describe it as interesting characters and intriguing worldbuilding, but executed clumsily.

We get it, the author is from Richmond, VA. There comes a point where the fine details of geography and landmarks start distracting from the story.

First person, present tense annoys me anyway. Add to this using 30 words when 10 will do, an unlikeable and poorly-defined main character, and nagging plot holes...yeah, not enjoying this one. I'll tough it out for the last bit but definitely listening at 1.5x speed.

There is something kind of odd about the writing style here but I can't quite put my finger on it. The pace is quite slow, but I like the characters and the setting enough that I don't mind it.

I feel like I should be vaguely annoyed about the digression into capitalism vs socialism but it was surprisingly interesting, if a little out of place.

Still not enthused about the vampire romance, but at least Joel Leslie's narration makes the characters more relatable.

This started off as kind of a standard story for the genre, but Mal and Alp are absolutely delightful. The banter between the two has had me laughing out loud many times.

The reveals are still slow and I want to smack Haruka upside the head. I'll say, though, that it's been a while since I had a book that was this compelling, like oh-crap-it's-late-but-just-one-more-chapter kind of compelling.

Interesting characters so far, but it seems to have a bit of that first-novel throw-in-everything-but-the-kitchen-sink vibe going on. Also, the editing definitely needs some work. Nothing awful but a good number of omitted words/homophones/etc.

I haven't been wowed by Scott Alford's narration in this series to date, but it's just really...not great in this one. I think what's bugging me is that (questionable Southern accent aside) James' intonations are way off, with the tone of the sentence going up at the end of sentences instead of down (if that makes sense). Rowan's voice is pretty unemotional, even when he's supposed to be emotional. Ugh.

It's probably bad that at 80% of the book, in the middle of the Big Action Sequence, I really don't care what happens (also a nasty thread of misogyny going on too).

Still uncertain about this one. The protagonist isn't particularly sympathetic, but the world-building, though sketchy so far, is intriguing and the side-characters are interesting.

Maybe it says something about the romances I've been reading lately, but it's so refreshing that I like all of these characters, and they (mostly) communicate like rational adults.

So I get that's kind of an underlying theme of the series, but Rain's lack of social awareness and sense of self-preservation comparable to a drunken hamster is starting to wear a bit thin. It doesn't help that I have little patience for manufactured dramatic conflict that could be resolved if the two MCs just sat down and, you know, talked to each other.

This is a good story, but it is also written in a very un-romance way (not a complaint, more of an observation). It reminds me a lot of the writing in
Lupine Road
.
